Murder suspect kills inmate in Mzuzu prison as Malawi son kills mum for rebuking his thievery

A 25 year old murder suspect on full remand at Mzuzu prison has allegedly killed an inmate after the two picked a quarrel over sleeping space due to high congestion in the prison.

Prison authorities said Muda Mhango allegedly killed Abel Jere, 40 who was serving a jail sentence for unlawful wounding.

The officials said on Tuesday, there were 580 inmates against its capacity of 200 forcing each inch of space to be occupied by the inmates.

They said this is when Mhone and Jere went to the prison male section toilet which was also full.

In the course of sleep, the two picked up a quarrel on the sleeping space and a fight ensued leading to the death of Jere.

Prison official Austin Masangwale confirmed the incident and said the issue has been referred to police.

Mzuzu police spokesperson Morris Chapola said the police are working on the death reports.

In Mulanje, a 26 year old man is in police custody for allegely killing his biological mother for rebuking him over his theft tendencies.

Police spokesman in Mulanje Gracian Ngwira said Sanudi Bonongwe is in police custody to awaiting murder case.

Ngwira said Sanudi had earlier stolen a bicycle belonging to one of the villagers and then stole another one belonging to her mother.

This did not go down well with her mother who wanted him arrested unless he brought back the bicycles.

That night, Sanudi killed his mother, Sellina by suffocating her and left her half buried in his boys quarters or gowelo. Then a villager had his two chickens stolen and reported the matter to a village chief, whom with the owner of the chickens decided to follow footsteps from the chicken kraal leading the two to the Sanudi’s house.

After they forced open the door, they found Sanudi’s mother dead and half killed.

Sellina and Sanudi hailed from Nzizira in chief Mthiramanja’s area in Mulanje.
