Muslim Association of Malawi jostles govt to intervene on hijab gear
Officials from the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) are accusing the government of passiveness as school management as Anglican run school in Balaka continue to send back girls who put on hijab, a Muslim women gear.
Mmanga schools opened a week ago after it closed for three weeks over disagreements between the school administrators and Muslims over hijab wearing during classes.
Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, spokesperson of MAM said although the schools are open, Muslim girls are not allowed to put on hijab during classes.
“The ministry of Education should not keep quiet over these issues. Our girls are being denied a right to education,” said Chabulika.
The government issued a statement telling school management not to send back learners and students because of dress code.
However, the Catholic church has defied the order, arguing education laws in the country do not allow hijabs as part of dress code.

This is a difficult conversation. Clearly you can’t mix Christian views and Islamic views on this issue.
The best solution is to have Moslems go to Islamic schools or purely government schools if wearing a Hijab is permitted. I don’t think the Catholics would allow that and it is within their rights to dictate dress code. I am sure the same would apply if a catholic girl refused to wear a Hijab in an Islamic school.
controversy over dressing? well, in my opinion I think the gear is OK though am not a Muslim. Just allow them to put the hijab on. If it’s a school that has it’s own uniform then they should comply and dress as every student is supposed to. However, a ban on that gear would be too harsh.
HIJABILISING is one of a belief in the muslem community then why do you want to invade the belief of others. sheik should come back to his senses. you either build your own or you practice that in government schools.

Christians own over half the schools in this country. Do you really think Government would risk all those schools becoming real private schools and leaving over 5 million kids stranded? Build your own

Why do muslim schools don’t allow Christians not to put Hijab in their schools? Do you call that fairness?
My Daughter was at Mariam TTC in Mangochi… he was forced to be in a hijab.. we didn’t complain because we were looking for education.
Please do the same to Christian schools… if you want your kids to attend classes… remove that thing.
MAM General Secretary please allow the kids to go to school without the hijab. I do not think Allah will punish you for that. Allah will punish you if you let young minds fail to get education because of spirituality issues which are after all understood by adults. It becomes a problem when organisations like MAM fail to understand a simple instruction from the owners of the school. MAM has to settle this issue not by running to the government for intervention. Issue a FATWA to allow these kids to go to school without the hijab for now.
Let these infidels build their own schools or else let churches take back their schools if the government decides otherwise. You are building mosques and no schools at all. Your colleagues build schools and churches alike. Go to LEA schools and not mission schools.
This shows you muslims are arrogant and you don’t want peace at all.The ones who owned the school have not deny anyone pupil from attending classes whether a muslim or christian but all they need is to adhere to their rules.If you can’t manage adhere to their rules then you have got rights to go somewhere else.
Where on earth can someone can issue demands on an institute that does not belong to you. It has been too long for muslim community to assist by providing education. Imagine no schools, but they are well aware that education is a must do. Do not waste time dictating instructions over structures that belong to other people. Please reconsider assisting government by complimenting efforts in Education, Health and Development
muslims should have been more civil in their approach coz they dont own many schools if any. they shud not push so hard coz it triggers emotions and fear of takeover in the owners of the school who will reject the hijab just becoz they think muslims want to dictate in the schools . hijab or no hijab its just nonsense. so either muslims should build their own barakat schools or they should have a little respect to the owners of the school . govt will not do anything to change anything coz they know cotholics run the education in this country and its a fact…
