Muslim body calls for calm as Malawi awaits election results
Muslim Supreme Council of Malawi is calling on Malawians to lead calm as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) continues to rectify the anomalies that have dogged the elections.
Secretary General of the Muslim Council Imran Katona told Nyasa Times that there is great need for Malawians to put political interest aside during this seemingly tense political situation which Malawi is currently experiencing.
There have been disputes over the counting and announcement of results following out-going President Joyce Banda’s aborted attempt to nullifying the elections over allegations of massive irregularities in some of the polling stations where number of votes or voters were bloated.
“Politicians should ensure that they are not inciting violence in their comments over the matter and let the law take its course. After everything should be left in the hand of MEC because they are the authorities mandated to handle electoral issues,” said Katona.
He also said Malawi is a peaceful and God fearing nation “As such we all need a better Malawi, let’s hold our peace and let Malawi Electoral Commission to do its Job.”
“The supreme council of Malawi therefore strongly condemns acts of some politicians who are trying to sabotage Malawi Electoral Commission to carry out its duties effectively”.
