President Peter Mutharika has said that he will take all necessary measures to defend and protect the country’s borders from those want to disrupt ports of entry with anti-Jane Ansah protests planned for August 26 to 30.

HRDC have said  the protesters will occupy the country’s airports and border posts if Ansah does not resign as Malawi Electoral Commisison (MEC) chairperson.

The airports and border demonstrations are supported by opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party.

HRDC is accusing Ansah of mismanaging the May 21 presidential election results, in which President Mutharika was declared winner.

But speaking on Wednesday in the lakeshore district of Mangochi when he  commissioned the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) ships at Malindi, a visibly livid Mutharika said he has since directed the police and the army to stop “these demonstrations”.

Mutharika said the demonstrations organised by HRDC with support from MCP and UTM are not about elections but rather they are about usurping power from him.

He said MCP and UTM are using HRDC to achieve their goal of taking power violently.

President Mutharika went on to say that the demonstrations at the borders are a clear ‘declaration of war’ on Malawi by HRDC and opposition parties, hence they will be met with “all the necessary force”.

Said Mutharika:”I am directing the Police and MDF to stop these demonstrations. Should HRDC, MCP and UTM go ahead with the demonstrations, let them not say that they were not warned.”

Mutharika said as Malawi Head of  State, he has a duty to defend the Constitution, ensure the safety of all Malawians, protect the borders and stop what he called thuggery.

“Without the borders, there is no Malawi,” said Mutharika, a former law professor before joining politics.

“These people [HRDC, MCP & UTM] are waging war on our country and it’s treasonous.

“I have no choice but to take necessary measures to protect the borders with all the necessary force,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika added that HRDC and the opposition have so far, failed to conduct peaceful demonstrations as they have turned violent with vandalism and looting.

He said HRDC and the opposition political leaders are undermining the law and they have become “a law unto themselves” and warned that if Malawians are not careful “one day, evil will rule this country.”

President Peter Mutharika and his DPP must never be cheated that the whole MPS and MDF belong to them because most of men and women in uniform are as angry as those demonstrators. Why has Jane Ansah been siding with DPP? Why has MEC been siding with DPP even in the on going court? Why is Jane Ansah not resigning when right now she is in hiding, not performing duties as MEC chair anymore?

If these demonstrations were coming after a court ruling that did not seem acceptable by the majority of people, as a Malawian I would have supported them wholeheartedly in the name of protecting our country. But for now, what are we really demonstrating about? There is a difference between personal greed by the leaders of the demos and fighting for Malawians.

Institution framework must be strengthened, removing all forms of partisans in its structure so that Malawi should be better than when you found it. Money has never inspired people to civilization but ideas that leads to future growth and prosperity.   39. WE NEED A LEADER IN THE NORTH NOW THAN EVER BEFORE

    I didn’t want to say this, and I don’t know how best to put this. But, it has to be said. I know I will be called names, but, I have to say this because for the sake of mother Malawi. We are poor but very vocal. And, at times, we forget that we are poor just because we are happy at distracting ourselves.

    The election issue requires a POLITICAL SOLUTION. No courts will solve this.

    The main problem we have now for fruitful discussion and peace at present is that the north is the loudest minority and now leaderless. That is why even the Mtambos and the Livingstonia synod are trying to fill this void.

    We had a similar problem when Muluzi came to power. Luckily, we had a leader in the north, Chakufwa (MHSRP). There were discussions that ended up in amending the constitution to allow for a second VP. Muluzi was able to bring into his cabinet Chakukwa as second VP. This provision is still there. Mutharika has the powers to select anyone to be the second VP. But, who can it be? For sure not Chilima. If Mutharika takes Chakwera, would the north be satisfied? I don’t believe so. We need a leader in the north who can lead the negotiations. At present, we don’t have. This is the only solution. A POLITICAL SOLUTION. Why? If one is following the case in Lilongwe now, any ruling by the judges will not be acceptable by a certain group. My worry, if other regions start responding to the way the north is behaving, we are in for trouble. We are one Malawi. Please. Look around wherever you live, wherever you work, whatever you do, there are people from the whole Malawi. It’s not about regions.

    The north will always listen to their leaders. The same way the respect, village chiefs, TAs et. Who will stand up as the leader in the north. We need a leader now. This embracing of MCP/UTM is temporal. Aford is to blame. We are wired as regional people. Unfortunately.

    Forget about the Semberaka and Pence, they know they are being used. People embraced Chilima, he ate into the MCP votes, now we have this problem. Otherwise, MCP was going to win straight. And, forget about Chilima. He is spent force. Both Chakwera and Chilima they understand the Malawi political dynamics. They both know they need Mtambo. Now he is in the UK papers. Have you seen Chilima and Chakwera in the UK papers like Mtambo? Whether one likes it not, the north is a political heavy weight. Go back to Dr. Kamuzu Banda days.
