Mutharika family fails to honour MOU with govt over Bingu mausoleum care

Government is accusing the Mutharika family of failing to honour a memorandum of understanding which could have seen the government taking over the care of former President Bingu wa Mutharika’s mausoleum at Ndata in Thyolo.

The MOU was signed six months ago but according to government, the family has not yet cleared officials from the Department of Monumental and Culture to start taking care of the mausoleum.

Monument and Culture Director, Dr. Lovemore Mazibuko, said the government is still waiting and reminding the family of the agreement, which has an opinion on how the government should take over the mausoleum.
Dr. Mazibuko, however, while appreciating that it is a process, said the delay is affecting the government’s desire to start managing the resting place of the former president.
The Mutharika family is yet to comment on the matter.
At one point, there was overgrown grass at the mausoleum and DPP cadets rushed to cut it after reports on social media platforms.
