Mutharika joins ‘Way of the Cross’ procession

Malawi’s opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Arthur Peter Mutharika  was among thousands of people who joined Roman Catholic faithful in the annual walking pilgrimage of the Way of the Cross in commercial city of Blantyre.

St Pius Parish and St Peter and Paul (Chilobwe) Catholic Churches joined hands  marking Good Friday by commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Bearing a wooden cross, Christians from the two churches jointly walked the Way of the Cross from St Pius Church through Zingwangwa and Chimwankhunda ending at St Peter and Paul Church in Chilobwe as a symbol of their faith Friday morning in the “Way of the Cross Procession.”

Mutharika joined the Catholic faithful in Zingwangwa and walked for some minutes amid tight security before jumping into his vehicle. Mutharika also carried the Cross for some meters

According to the Gospels, Jesus ate his last supper hours before he was betrayed. Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and resurrected on Easter Sunday.
