Mutharika wants northerners extinct – Aford

Northerners are the major target of structural and systematic discrimination by the DPP led government with the agenda to bring about extinction of a people alleged to have dominated education and employment opportunities in Malawi, the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has claimed.

The party said in a statement that President Mutharika decided to impose quotas in employment, University and every where as one way of fighting northernors.

“In other instances, northerners cannot access small loans to start up some Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)… confirming the fears that the decision was indeed personal..to initiate systematic genocide against a people,” Aford’s Chairperson for Elections Dan Msowoya said in statement made available to Nyasa Timeson Tuesday.

Aford further claims frequent pronouncements by President Mutharika during his so called press conferences about disparities in employment opportunities by comparing demographic statistics of districts in the north with the others elsewhere, is indicative of his hatred for northerners.

“He argued for instance, that Chitipa’s overall population is far less than that of Chiradzulu. In his view, no matter how many competent professionals there might be in Chitipa eligible for top positions in employment it is unfair. By inference, this implies rewarding failure and condoning mediocrity,” said the statement.

Msowoya queried how a Head of State and Government chooses to premeditatedly plan to harm the very people that elected him.

“Chitipa a sample of his research is an underdeveloped district. Its people are poor, their hope of survival is in education and employment… His policy seeks to perpetuate poverty on these citizens,” he said.

Malawi government verbose spokesperson Patricia Kaliati refused to comment on the allegations saying northerners always want publicity on ‘small things’.

But the party hit back saying it is not the first time Kaliati has deliberately attacked northerners.

“She has repeatedly raised issues against northerners. She has incessantly castigated northerners for possessing mansions in the Southern or Central regions and not in the north,” Msowoya said.

Aford is the party which has its base in the northern region. It has two members of parliament, Khwauli Msiska and Enock Chihana.

The party is currently led by Dindi Gowa Nyasulu.
