Mwenifumbo gives HRDC thumbs up: Malawi pro-democracy hero Chihana honoured
Outspoken politician Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo has given a thumbs up to Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) leaders for their continued fight against human rights abuses in the country.
Mwenifumbo said this on Saturday in Mzuzu when HRDC held a special event to honour Alliance for Democracy (Aford) leader Chakufwa Chihana and those butchered in cold blood by police in the small city during the July 20, 2011 protests.
“You are bold and continue to fight for human rights despite threats to your lives and property,” said Mwenifumbo.
He says the threats on HRDC lives were aimed at silencing the rights activists but said it was encouraging that the activists have the fighting spirit which late Chihana had which led to the birth of the country’s democracy in 1993.
HRDC leaders and Aford members gathered at the burial site of Chihana to honour him for the role he played to bring about multiparty democracy in the country.
On 6 April 1992, Chakufwa Tom Chihana walked into the den of lions when he landed at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) and openly did the unthinkable. He challenged the entrenched Kamuzu Banda’s 31-year-old autocratic rule under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Effectively, he put into motion, with others, a movement that saw the feared MCP regime crumble; hence entered into the annals of history as one of the founding fathers of Malawi’s multipartyism.
Chihana died in June 2006.

HRDC has turned into a grouping of idiots with political operatives as their business. No wonder the international community has lost trust and touch they used to do in the past.
HRDC pano is behaving like a political party
I was there when Chihana came, He was not used by any party but he fought the oppressor Government of Dr Banda. Chihana never destroyed anybody property, he was a peaceful man. He was embraced by all Malawians in 1992 and infact he was the only one who the South received thunderously at the high court before MULUZI and his gang divided the Nation. HRDC you take instructions from MCP, you have used Nyau to threaten Malawians, You killed and destroyed property, you undressed an off duty police officer, you attacked and destroyed a Pastors property simply because he is a commissioner. Now you want to buy sympathy from the North by disguising yourselves as you care, those who care dont cause pain as you have done to Malawians. Chihana up to the time he died he was a peace maker, he sacrificed his party for the sake of peace, he never allowed Malawi to be divided in 1999 when there was open rigging against MCP and AFORD led by Chakuamba which UDF openly rigged with the assistance of another sector of MCP Led by the Central region MCPs led by Tembo.
HRDC Your behavior is like that of a rabid dog on a leash being led by MCP President, you are taking instructions from MCP, HRDC you have a hidden agenda, simply just register as a Party dont fight the Battles of MCP. Hon Kalua and Chihana said and I quote” Fisi ndi Fisi ngakhale asinthe mapiri okhala. The current MCP is so radical and their signature of killing and Nkhanza is very visible in what they do using you HRDC and dont expect any change from them, they are taking advantage that most of the young people now were born in the 80s, 90s and they dont know how people suffered under MCP

Those of us who were around during the dictator Ngwazi’s regime can testify to the Nazi style atrocities exacted by him and his MCP. It was as if he had a limitless ticket to do whatever he wanted to anybody, and any time.
And now, the HDRC group, whether they like it or not, will be associated with MCP for a long time. To be sure.
Furthermore, with the so-called new MCP having sponsored the recent looting and extreme violence in this country, I am very doubtful if the Party has really shed it’s modus operandi, as it’s members, including the Ultras, continue to claim vehemently.
Where is Enoch? Missed it? And Yeremiya? HRDC idiots should not play with the spirit of Chakufwa. Let rest in peace.
Chakufwa Chihana should really be honoured and go into the annals of Malawi History. He intervened when Malawi was descending into an Autocratic and cruel government through MCP. I remember terrible and inhumane things that the Malawi government did. Such as i) when little Children in Primary schools in Blantyre were forced to be on the streets from 06:00 Hours to about 19:00 hours without food just to wait for Kamuzu Banda who was doing Crop Inspection in Mzimba, returning at a time unspecified time. ii) The Kampulusas and a Minister (Bwanali) ordered a Bus with Passengers travelling all the way from Lilongwe to Blantyre Depot via Zomba and Limbe were Blocked and detained at Chinyonga for hours and hours just because Kamuzu was addressing MCP cadres in Kamuzu Stadium. This was cruelity at its best by MCP. But Chihana boldly stood against these cruel acts. May his Soul Rest in Peace. He reality liberated Malawi from cruel MCP government. The Muluzis and the lot were just opportunists because they were no where when the battle was hot, hot. against Kamuzu.
..this dude lost his credibility before his death. Only to his group HRDC and Aford members he is what he is.Otherwise He died a corrupt broken politician!

To say the honest truth, Chihana deserves all the honors for fighting for freedom and democracy in Malawi than any other Malawian. For Bingu to become a president of Malawi, it is all because of Chihana fought fearlessly for freedom. Chihana dedicated all his life to Malawians. He did not make it to a president because he was a norther who are a minority in Malawi. It’s sad that some Malawians can’t recognize him. Politics aside, politicians must honor Chihana every year and recognize his death by national mourning through prayers.
