Mzuni students arrested for assaulting official

Police on Friday arrested four Mzuzu University student leaders for allegedly assaulting a college’s Director of Finance and Investments (DFI), Catherine Kazembe,

The four, who are members of the Mzuzu University Students Representative Council (MUSREC),: Moses Chalera (president), Mathews Jembelamala (speaker), Goldon Phiri (off-campus director) and Christina Phungwako (sports director,) reportedly  dragged  the DFI out of office and out of campus.

The students allegedly assaulted Kazembe, accusing her  of mismanaging the institutions money, hence being responsible for the financial woes Mzuni has been experiencing.

Police said Kazembe reported the matter of harassment and assault and identified the four as the culprits.

“We arrested the four as suspects,” Mzuzu police spokesman Edward Longwe said.

“We are still carrying investigations in this matter,” he added.

MUSREC president Moses Chalera said the student leaders  were arrested whe they had gone to police on Friday to give a statement about a student who broke his hand during the fracas involving students and the DFI.

Last year Mzuni students demanded to their Chancellor, President Bingu wa Mutharika, the removal of Kazembe as DFI which forced her to resign but she later rescinded the decision.

Mzuni Council however rejected her withdraw of the resignation letter but she sought a court injunction  which was granted ordering the Council to continue  recognising her as DFI.
