It is all smiles for teams that play in the Division One in Mzuzu and surrounding districts. Money for the league has been raised from K3 million to k6 million by Mzuzu Coffee authorities.mzuzu-coffee

Speaking to Nyasa Times, General Secretary for the Northern Region Football Association, Patel Kaunda, confirmed the development saying the league will be competed by teams from districts where coffee is grown namely NkhataBay, Rumphi, Chitipa, Mzimba with an addition of Mzuzu City.

Kaunda added that netball will be included in the districts while in Mzuzu City there will also be women’s football.

“We are very thankful to Mzuzu Coffee authorities for the adjustment. It’s not easy considering the economic turmoil that Malawi is going through. This is a milestone in the development of sports. As an association, we will ensure that district committees in conjunction with the NRFA sub committee running the league do their work diligently with transparency and accountability without fear or fever,” retorted Kaunda.

The development means that the division one league is now more prestigious than the second tier Simama regional league sponsored by Bishop Abraham Simama, which is still at 4 million Kwacha.

Quizzed on what the NRFA would do to make sure the top league remains on top financially, Kaunda said relevant officials were consulted and they assured the association of raising the monies in future.

For now, Simama league remains at K4 million.

Date for the kickoff of the 2016/17 season for Mzuzu and District football league is not yet known.
