Mzuzu University staff rebuff 10% salary increament: University of Malawi Council says Poly reopening nigh

Members of Mzuzu University Academic Staff Union (Muasu) and Mzuni Non-academic Staff Trade Union (Munastu) have  rejected a 10 percemt salary increment offer offered to them by the university’s administration.

Mzuni Students Union president Wazamazama Katatu: Concerned

Muasu and Munastu members’ salaries have not been increased in two years, and they are demanding a 35 percent increment.

The staff withdrew their labour for three months now over the matter.

But in an attempt to lure the staff back to work, in a closed meeting on Monday last week, the University’s Council offered the 10 percent increment.

The staff rebuff 10 percent as manifestly inadequate, saying at least 20 percent would be minimum to be accepted.

Munastu president Gruno Muyola said they will only resume work if the university meets their demand.

Mzuni Students Union president Wazamazama Katatu says they still concerned with the deadlock.

Katatu called on concerned  parties to empathise with the students who are the victims of the labour dispute.

Meanwhile, the University of Malawi (Unima) Council has assured that Polytechnic, one of the  four  Unima constituent colleges will reopen within the next three months.

This, according presidential spokesman Mgeme Kalillani was assured by  newly-appointed  member of the Unima Council  when they met President Peter Mutharika, who is also Chancellor of Unima at Kamuzu palace.

Kalilai said President Mutharika was “pleased” to receive a report that the council of the university is set to reopen.

  1. Now ODL students are in big problem. Studying time now is becoming a prblem coz there is no any positive feedback. Pliz don’t punish the students

  2. Just kick off the striking staff. Moreover, they are not marketable. They can’t even conduct an empirical research. Blood full zanu

    1. a Ujeni, what do you have that you can show off, you may not been in the corridals of any university, you are stupid. You do not know what happens there, mbuli. what comments have you put on the maladministration which is at Mzuni? what you contribute is microscopic, the bacterium is knowledgeable than you.

  3. CRY MY BELOVED COUNTRY MALAWI.
WE ARE NOW REMEMBERING OUR LATE NGWAZI DR H. KAMUZU BANDA. THINGS OF THIS NATURE WERE NOT THERE. DURING HIS REIGN EDUCATION WAS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE AND WAS GIVEN THE DUE ATTENTION.

GOD HAVE MERCY ON OUR LAND AND FORGIVE ALL OUR INIQUITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Government has no money, my foot. Where is the K9.5 billion maizegate cash going? Our priorities are upside down here. Why do we have these impasses only when DPP is in power? Something is wrong somewhere….

  5. Kupita kwa Ridly kupangisa kuti mwina mu office mwnaga musamabwere anthu a miseche ngati a Luke Mwale. Iwe Luke Mwale, why do you always talk ill of other people on Mzuni campus? Why do you always talk ill of you Department and its all members? Why do you always tell the VC that members in your Faculty ndi ofoila? Why do you always talk ill of fellow Deans such as Dr Singini, Gwayi and Mike Zulu? Unfortunately, the VC entertains such shit when you tell him such shit. Surely, Dr Ridly must go. Please Mzuni, institute a commission of Inquiry on the following: 1. VC’s misuse of University limited funds as he travels every week to Lilongwe to be with the Family, Registrar’s and other members’s drawing of University allowances each time he travels with the team, 3. Is Mzuni Fc a Mzuni team or an outside team sponsored by MZUNI? Finally, a Luke Mwale chonde, musamabwere ku office kwnaga ndi maboza, I’m still a very young administrator I dont want to cross with my future bosses. Komaso zomanamiza ma member of staff anu zinthu zoti sizinachoke ku office kwanga musiye. Ine am just messenger of University Committees, I dont make decisions. Please, grow up.

    1. Koma this guy called Luke Mwale should do some soul searching, he is injuring a lot of people at MZUNI. I advise management to remove him from all committees. The problem with this Tanzanian trained guy is that he is too talkative. for nothing. When he joined MZUNI, he quickly pretended to be a good guy and penetrated the system. Anyway, I dont blame him, I blame those entertain his shit. He is married to a beautiful and humble wife and whattever he does is an embarrassment to such a humble wifw. Luke Mwale uchite manyazi. Its high time you started bahaviing professionally. Ili ndi dziko ayise, these people you are trumping upon will one day do the same to you. Uzaona moyo ku wawa ndithu. You should also stop telling people that the DVC requested you to offer her daughter a job; stop this nonsense!

      1. Here are the outcomes of the Staff Promotion Committee as leaked by Luke Mwalw:

        1. “I advised the Committee not to promote Bright Nyirenda of Tourism because he has not published according to my expectation. Although some people wanted to promote him I told them that the VC advised me to tell you that he should not be promoted” (Mwale, 2016).

        2. “I was tasked to investigate if Mr Gift Dube’s publications were genuine but I discovered that they were not credible because they were published by his students. I advised the Committee not to promote him. The VC told me that Mr. Dube confronted him but I advised the VC not to promote him” (Mwale, 2016).
        3. For Dr Ambumulire, I advised the Committee that she should get promoted as soon as she produces another paper” (Mwale, 2016).
        4. Dr Dan Harawa who calls me by my first name said, Luke do you think it is important to promote Mr Nkhoma to the position of Associate Professor when he does not have a PhD? I advised him and the Council to promote him because the handbook (book 1) is clear”. (Mwale 2016).
Throw back 2012: “The interviews went on well but the VC Search Committee settled for Professor Uta who came second to Dr. Msilimba. In my view both cannot make good VCs and the best way is to deliberately tell Dr Msilimba so that he confuses the whole process by taking MZUNI to court”. Just a reminder, Msilimba took Mzuni to court and the results were nullified.

These are the fruits of being too talkative for nothing. Say no to the rotten behaviour of Luke Mwale.

Now the same Committee promoted the same Luke Mwale. I did some research this morning only to find the following essays that were used to dubiously promote him:

If you are a genuine scholar, check Book one and see if this guy was promoted on merit.

I rest my case good people.

        1. I have learnt some lessons. I will be quiet and a slave of my people. My subordinates will be my bosses. Apologies to all people that I have injured unknowingly. Apologies to my fellow deans (especially Mike Zulu) for the negative comments, apologies to my members in the Faculty and Department for my oppressive leadership, apologies to all the members of the committee in which I belong for being reckless in leaking confidential information, apologies to the VC for telling lies to you sir about my fellow deans, my members in the faculty and members of various committees. Finally, apologies to members of the promotion committees for submitting essays that you used to promote me; I will do a lot of research to prove some people wrong. Tafadhali Nisamehe (Please forgive me).

  6. Bad news and good news! Why good news? By the end of January, Mzuni will no longer be subjected to maladministration of Jedegwa and Ridly as their contracts will have expired; no one to conduct the interviews. Now this administration that has defrauded Mzuni will need to be investigated and brought to book for sure. Imagine people!, the Registrar is always escorting MZUNI FC week in week out drawing exceeding allowances. This Registrar is a failed project. Imagine good people!, the so called white VC is using a rented car, and is always on the road to Lilongwe to be with his family using the University fuel and drawing allowances. Both the VC and Registrar should be investigated. Respected Chair of Council, I have an advise for you, Do not appoint any of these thieves in acting capacity when their contracts expire this month; otherwise I will personally take you to court and surely, you will lose. You have to know they were both dismissed from CHANCO.
Why bad news? our bright and innocent students will continue to languish in their respective homes. But trust me, things will be alright my dear students, I love and miss you so much. when you come back, we will start looking at the effects of urbanization on customary land. Mzuni will shine again when we get rid of Jedegwa and Ridley this month.

  7. The management is fake. Staff is demanding 35% why give them 10%. After all, this is not salary increase at all, its just there to cushion the inflation.

Let the government give them 25% and let students go back to school. Government can source funds to pay lecturers. Education is a right and therefore it must be invested. Or disband Mzuni FC and give money to staff. Mzuni FC is not the core business of the university. If Mzuni has no money, how does mzuni afford rented cars, why can’t VC reside in Mzuzu? 10% is an insult to members of staff. Sometimes Peter Mutharika does not act as if he is an academician. Precious study time is being lost here.
