New party formed in Malawi: Chilumpha leader of PADD

Former vice president Dr Cassim Chilumpha has formed a new political party pledging to bring development to all corners of the country and practise genuine democracy.

Chilumpha is the interim of the new party which will be called People’s Assembly for DemocraCy and Development (PADD).

The party’s proposals included calls to reform the political system, equality of opportunity for women and ethnic minorities, and a fairer distribution of wealth.

Chilumpha, who has served as Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota South for close to 20 years now, is seen as a man who leads a quiet and isolated life.

The PADD president, a lawyer by profession, still faces treason charges.

He were arrested in 2006 on allegations that they were planning to assassinate former president, the late Bingu wa Mutharika, using hired assassins from South Africa.

Chilumpha and the late Mutharika fell out in 2005 after the former president left United Democratic Front (UDF), a party that sponsored him into power in 2004, to form DPP. Chilumpha remained in UDF until he joined People’s Party (PP) in 2012 and later dumped it.

The case has dragged on for nine years although government then said it had overwhelming evidence against the two.

Malawi Government has since blown at least K200 million (US$487 804) of public tax to pay a British lawyer Antony Berry and Malawians are continuing to pay legal fees and other claims

Berry is the Queen’s Counsel (QC) in the UK. He is leading a prosecution team comprising seasoned lawyers Patrice Nkhono and Pacharo Kayira.

The money spent on the lawyer is enough to buy over 100 ventilators which are in short supply in the country’s main hospitals. Ventilators are used to assist patients with breathing problems.

Key State witness in the case are 45-year-old Thomas Elias Ndlovu and Graham Minaar an intelligence expert were paid money from government to implicate Chilumpha.

Ndlovu, who runs a security firm in South Africa, is on record testifying at the High Court that he was given R800, 000 for him and his family to relocate from his normal Johannesburg base in South Africa as part of government’s witness protection procedure.

  4. I remember this Kaka was a minister of Finance in the Bakili Muluzi era and the time of Chatsika report. We were crying for the govt to raise our salaries but to no avail There was Strike which ended up to more than four months but nothing happened.

    Instead he did not exercise his powers as minister to do something. That time we were in pains. The economy of Malawi started falling apart the very moment. Now we are paying for the mistakes done by these people when they were in power. To vote for KAKA is just a waste of time. Please just find something to do.

    You failed to rule the country as vice president but how come you want to try as president.

  9. The guy has not been famous in frontline politics apart from being famous bcoz of the potical motivated case he was answering. I dont think his party will have followers apart from his wife, kids, relatives and symphathizers. Has nothing to offer to us malawians

  16. This is the same Dr Cassim Chilumpha (then UDF) who chased a student out of his classroom at the Polytechnic for wearing an MCP T-Shirt in his law class – he claims to be a democrat! My foot! I lost my respect for the guy since that incident.

  38. The reporting has diverted from PADD to treason charges. Lets be focused when reporting. At least we should have been told who are the other members, where was this meeting held, views of other people, what its stronghold could be etc etc.

  43. Mr Chilumpha has exercised his democratic right. But I feel the reporter ha not given us raw deal. He would enquired as to who else is the party, where was this foto taken. Did they say when they will be launching it? To cut the story short, give us information beyond photo and name of party.
