No dual citizenship for Malawi president – Law Commission

Malawi will have dual citizenship restrictions on President,  the vice-president and top government  officials if the recommendation by the Special Law Commission on the review of the Malawi Citizenship Act will be approved.

The restriction blacket if adopted will also include Speaker of the National Assembly, Cabinet ministers, Chief Justice, members of parliament, Attorney General, judges, Chief  Secretary to the Government.

Chairperson of the Commission Justice Renzine Mzikamanda said also to be restricted will be law enforcers, department of immigration and Malawi Defence Force.

The commission will present the report to Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for presentation before Cabinet and a Bill be  presented to Parliament for enactment of the citizen legislation and review of Immigration and Citizenship Act.

In December 2018, Parliament approved the Dual Citizenship legislation.

You dont enact a law targeting somebody. What if people in diaspora with dual citizenship want to contest as President? We want them to be barred, thats unfair.

They will not allowed. Why be governed by a foreigner or someone whose one leg is in India and the other one Malawi
