Noel Chalamanda elected Mayor of Blantyre 

Members of Parliament and Ward Councilors from Blantyre City have elected renowned private practice lawyer Noel Chalamanda, independent councilor for Blantyre City Centre Ward as the new mayor for the city.

Chalamanda floored  former MP Alinane George Chipwete with 23 votes to 7. The only female candidate Gertrude Chirambo got one vote.

The new Mayor said he has a  vision to bring back the Blantyre where sanitation shall be treated as a right of all the city dwellers, where the stinking rivers shall be turned into amusement parks, where new technologies  such as recycling and incineration shall be used to take care of waste, where clinics shall be within easy reach for all.

“It is a clear vision to attend to the infrastructure and ensure decent roads, pavements, street lights, bridges, decent and modern office and business centres,” Chalamanda said.

Wild Ndipo is the deputy mayor for Blantyre City. He got 13 votes beating Joseph Nyson Makwinja who got 11 votes, Evans Taulo, 5 votes and Joyce Malunga, two votes.

Earlier on the voting was cancelled following a fracasas ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters and police engaged in running battles.

DPP supporters were demanding that their councillor Louis Ngalande’s name be included on the list of the candidates vying for the position of mayor.
