Police arrest 12 over Nsundwe violence, cop murder: ‘More arrests looming’

Malawi Police say they have arrested 12 suspects in connection with violent protests at Nsundwe in Lilongwe which has cost a life of a police officer.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said the 12 were rounded up at the trading centre following the violent protests but could not say if they will  answer murder charges following the stoning to death of the police officer.

“Many more are likely to be arrested,” said Kadadzera.

Meanwhile, Kadadzera has identified the deceased as Usumani Imedi who was stationed at C-company in Lilongwe.

President Peter Mutharika has since condemned the killing of Imedi whilst the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the centre Binton Kutsaira said at a political rally in Lilongwe that opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters killed the cop.

There was no immediate reaction from the MCP but the protestors said they were demonstrating against president Peter Mutharika’s decision to hold a political rally in Lilongwe, deemed the political bedrock of the MCP.

In 2014 police officer was hiked to death by dpp at goliati when joice banda was conducting a rally there and dpp secretary then gin kalilani said mwatiputa dala mwatilowela kuchipinda kwathu i blaim JOICE for not taking a proper action on who killed the officer .   10. Did these people kill the police officer or it is just convenient for you to arrest them. That is where you get it wrong. No of the people who hacked people in Blantyre have been arrested. Non of the police officers who killed protesters in Mzuzu have been brought to book. None of those who killed Chasowa have faced the law. Do your work professionally police otherwise you and your families will no longer be safe. When people are angry, not even again scares them.

  11. The deceased has left behind three disabled children. Very sad for the family. Quite unfortunate to see some people rejoicing online over this tragedy. What is happening to the people of Malawi?

Wanton arrests and rounding up of people at the Nsundwe Trading centre will yield nothing because many people go into trading centres to buy necessities and very likely you have arrested wrong people. What the Security forces need to do is to arrest Mfumu, MCP Area Chairman and members of the so called Nsundwe Barracks. Things dont just happen, there are planners, foot soldiers who mount Road Blocks and these people are well known in their vicinity. Also dont forget to arrest head of the Dambwe there
