Police impound 50 vehicles in illegal maize exports

A total of 50 vehicles have been impounded for being used to illegally export maize from the country to neighboring countries.

Police spokesman James Kadadzera: the vehicles were seized in Karonga and Chitipa District

National Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), James Kadadzera said the vehicles were seized in Karonga and Chitipa Districts engaging in the malpractice of transporting maize illegally to neighboring countries.

According to Kadadzera, some people are still involved in the illegal practice of using unchartered routes to sell maize abroad.

The Police PRO said in its quest to reduce the malpractice, the Malawi Government has put in place tough measures by involving the Malawi Army and the police to seal all loopholes.

Kadadzera therefore urged the general public to report any such malpractices to relevant authorities to curb the practice of selling maize illegally abroad.

Recently, the government issued a ban restricting the exportation of maize from the country to promote food security.
