Police nab teacher over learner pregnancy
Malawi Police in Zomba Police have arrested a teacher for allegedly impregnating a student.
The teacher, Blessings Tanganyika 34, has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a female student under his care.
It is alleged that, between the months of April and May, 2019, the suspect who is a teacher at St. Bridget Community Day Secondary School secretly fell in love with a 19-year old Form 4 student.
Police say the two had been having sexual intercourse until the victim got pregnant and the issue came to light after the girl miscarried.
Upon being interrogated by her parents, the victim revealed that her teacher, Tanganyika, was responsible for the pregnancy and the matter was reported to Zomba Police Station, says the police.
The police say a follow-up was made and the suspect was arrested and charged with the offence of having sex with a minor which is contrary to section 159 A sub section B of the Penal code.
The suspect will soon appear before the court to answer the charge levelled against him.
Blessings Tanganyika hails from Chisa village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba district.

Is this really a crime? A girl at 19 getting pregnant and the man responsible is arrested? Is this arrest legal? The laws of Malawi says a “minor” is any person under the age of 18. Unless, the police tells the nation that it was rape in itself then people can understand, otherwise, let her deliver and come back to school. At 19, a girl is able resist advances of the teacher because she is deemed to be an adult and not a minor.
