PP attack Bingu for encouraging ‘politics of confrontation’

The Orange Partners, a youth organ of the Peoples Party (PP), say they are seriously disturbed by remarks made by President Bingu wa Mutharika in Thyolo where he urged his loyalists to deal with anyone who question his style of leadership.

Mutharika had publicly ordered his DPP Youth Cadets to disrupt any peaceful demonstration in this country.

“President Mutharika is not only horrifically abusing the role of the youth in the country by inciting them to be irresponsible monsters but he is also irresponsibly advocating for potential blood-shed in this country by encouraging politics of confrontation,” said Orange Partners in a statement signed by Joseph Chikwemba, its National Network Coordinator and made available to Nyasa Timeson Thursday.

Chikwemba: Condemn Mutharika

The Orange Partners remind President Mutharika that there is no leadership “on the face of the earth” that has survived by using violence and intimidation against its own people.

“We, the youth in the People’s Party, are fully convinced that no government can ever rise above the Constitution of Republic of Malawi without being criticised and paying the price. This Constitution was drafted by a cross section of stakeholders to ensure that the views, rights and concerns of all Malawians were included and covered.

“For any one individual to even think that they are above the Constitution is reprehensible. All of us, as citizens of the country, are to be held accountable for our actions according to the provisions of the Constitution and no-one, including the President, is above this most important document,” the statement reads in part.

The Orange Partners called on all the civilised and democratic youths in Malawi to exercise their Constitutional rights including the right to assemble and demonstrate with others, peacefully and unarmed, “even in the face of the cowardly and unwarranted intimidation by the Highest Office in the land”.

The Orange Partners, according to the statement, shall continue to urge on the country’s youths “to emulate the leadership of the Right Hon. Joyce Banda who, despite being mocked, criticized and humiliated in public by the President and his devotees, has never retaliated in any way”.

Banda is the State Vice President and founding President of the People’s Party.

The PP youth arm warned the DPP Youth Cadets that are advancing politics of intimidation and terrorism that it does not matter “how long they shall seem to be in power”, the long arm of justice shall still catch up with them one day, adding they cannot kill all Malawians that do not support Mutharika’s autocratic leadership.

“Finally, we would like to advise the Head of State to exercise his powers responsibly and realise that he cannot rule this country with an iron fist and expect Malawians to forget the hard won freedoms that they fought for in order for Malawi to be a democratic state.

“ Do not live in denial, Mr. President. Malawians and the world are watching you. You, surely, shall be judged according to your works,” the statement concludes.
