PP candidate denied vote, irregulaties in Malawi by-election: Pictures

Malawi ruling party’s parliamentary candidate for Mzimba Central constituency by-elections, Aaram Beza, on Tuesday, was refused to cast his vote because he was not a registered voter in the constituency.

Benza was turned down by electoral official at Ethuleni polling centre.

Officials said registered and already voted in Rumphi Central by-elections.

Malawi Electoral Commission’s spokesman Sangwani Mwafulirwa confirmed the development.

He said according to electoral laws, a person who already voted in another constituency cannot be allowed to vote in by-elections.

But Beza was not the only one sent back, there a number of the voters who were denied to cast their votes because their names were missing on the voters’ roll.

Officials said some were being sent back because they did not get transfer letters.

Mzimba Central fell vacant following the death of Prof Donton Mkandawire, a DPP MP. Another by-election was taking place in Mzimba South-West following the election of incumbent MP Khumbo Kachali to the vice-presidency
