Re-arrested Prison escapee jailed for another six month
Nkhotakota Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced 23 year-old Shida Kennedy Kambora to six months Imprisonment with Hard Labour for escaping from prison, and two years for burglary and theft.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Nkhotakota Police, Paul Malimwe, said the convict had escaped prison in March 2016 and was serving a two-year-jail term after a burglary and theft conviction.
Malimwe said State Prosecutor Sergeant Cedrick Cosmas re-counted facts before court which the suspect voluntarily admitted before the Magistrate.
“The behavior of the accused puts at risk the prison warders’ jobs and caused authorities to lose loss of trust in their officers due to such uncalled for tenancies of unrepentant inmates,” Cosmas told the court.
He further said the misconduct of the suspect had shown that he was still a criminal and not ready to change.
During mitigation, Kambora pleaded with the court to be lenient when passing verdict and promised to be a better citizen saying he had escaped with the aim of completing his education.
“I opted to run away in order to complete my education since I am a student and it was the power of the devil that drove me to do this”, he said.
However Magistrate Fred Juma Chilowetsa sentenced him to Six months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) to deter would-be offenders, and set an example to serving prisoners.
“Putting in consideration of your remorsefulness I hereby sentence you to six months IHL,” concluded Chilowetsa.
The charge leveled against him of escaping from a lawful custody is classified as misdemeanor which contravenes section 115 of the penal code.
