Registrar General warns to deregister non-compliant political parties

The Office of the Registrar General of Political Parties has warned that it will invalidate Malawi’s registered political parties that have not complied with the legal requirement to notify the Registrar of changes in their Constitution, rules or manifestoes.

Beauty Movete, Registrar General of Political Parties, warned that failure to comply with the legal requirement would lead to the cancellation of the party in accordance with Section 9(1) [c] of the Political Parties (Registration and Regulations) Act.

“Notice is hereby given to all registered political parties that in accordance with Section 11 of the Political Parties Act (Cap 2:07), political parties are required to notify the Registrar of Political Parties in writing of nay changes regarding address of the registered office, its bearers or in the particulars of its office bearers, within seven days of the occurrence of such changes.multiparty

“Furthermore, under Section 12 of the said Act, every registered political party must submit to the Registrar any amendment to its constitution, rules or manifesto within seven days of making any such amendment,” says Movete.

Movete has since given political parties 21 days to comply with the legal requirement or else they will be deregistered.

Political parties that have recently changed its office bearers include Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

UDF also made some amendments to its constitution.
