Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, founder of the Redeemed Presbyterian Church (RPC) on Sunday shocked the Livingstonia Synod’s Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) elders when nine of their pastors and and hundreds of followers defected to RPC.
Mhango, who is the former CCAP pastor under the Livingstonia Synold based in Lilongwe, was launching his RPC church at Maghemo hall in Karonga.
The launch was part of his plan to expand the church across the country.
Mhango was welcomed by hundreds of people some dressed in CCAP uniform when entering the hall.
“I am very happy today especially because of your hospitality. Your coming shows that you are all seeking for the truth and power of the Lord, and you will find as well as receive it today” said Mhango.
He said his church will also deal with humanitarian support, education, apart from spreading the word of God.
After seeing that half of its members absconded from the Sunday services to join the RPC, Greenwell Mwamondwe who is one of the CCAP church elders at Kabwiri in the district attacked Mhango and described him as a rebel.
“Don’t be deceived with him, he is a rebel. He is there today because of CCAP, his education is because of the Livingstonia Synold,” said Mwamondwe.
Mwamondwe, who is also the former ambassador to Zimbabwe and lawmaker, further said “mukupusikika waka namazgu ya munthu uyu.”
In an interview, Mhango said the doors are open to anyone and my aim is not to fight with the CCAP but to do the work of God.
Mhango said he believes that he is called by God to serve Him in a special way.
He said: “It’s just the grace of God. I feel that there is a task that God wants me to fulfil.l. God can use any situation to make things happen differently. I feel called in a special way and these developments are a huge encouragement to my life.”
Mhango unveiled the RPC at its Kanengo Congregation after cutting ties with Livingstonia Synod following his refusal to take up a post in Euthini.
Livingstonia Synod’s Reverend Peter Mhlanga, who was ministering at Thunduwike congregation under Jambo Presbytery in Mzimba, recently also joined the Redeemed Presbytery Church .
