Sabadia arrested: City Motors boss in over Mera procurement scandal

Businessman and proprietor of City Motors Limited, Aslam Sabadia has  been arrested by Fiscal Police over investigations of the procurement of a new mobile laboratory fuel testing van by Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera).

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said he could not provide more details on the matter which he said is still under investigations.

Fiscal police have already arrested Mera chief executive officer Collins Magalasi and Bright Mbewe from Mera’s procurement department over the contract that relates to the procurement of a K700 million fuel testing van.

The energy sector regulator awarded the contract to City Motors.

However, it has emerged that on 7th May 2019, Mera paid City Motors MK563, 200,000.00 which translates into 80 percent as advance payment, contrary to Procurement Regulations to make advance payment in purchase of goods procured locally.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has also asked the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to act on the matter.

  1. @ Martin ,
You’ve spoken my mind, well said bro.

However , James Kadadzera amazes me.
He is always quite or mean with info when the issue at hand is concerning an Indian or a non Malawian , but too quick to divulge more garbage when they’re indigenous Malawians.
    Shame !!

  2. The Sabadias have been corrupting each and every administration. During Kamuzu administration, they used to supply all military, prison and police landrovers

  3. All we need is this cases to end and see them going to prison or giving back wàt they stole from the pubic

  4. Politicians and influential public officials and some scrupulous business people use the weaknesses in procurement process to steal money from government while the poor are dying in our hospitals due to lack of basic medication.
MK 700 million is equivalent to 1million US dollars and that’s way-way too exorbitant for a testing van and the period taken to deliver stinks corruption. That testing van being a Mitsubishi, it means was imported from either Japan or South Africa, both countries are capable of fitting the testing equipment well within 45 days and deliver in 21 to 90 days with costs of anything between R2.5 and R3 million or U$170,000 to U$200,000 (MK120million to MK150million). More than 60% of that MK700 was shared among Magalasi and his company and the supplier. What about 80% advance payment that stayed in the supplier’s pocket for over a year? If it was the government delayed payment, the same supplier would have claimed billions in accrued interest.
Malawi is not poor but few greedy people we call leaders are the ones condemning all of us to the receiving end of poverty that we are in.

  5. End of an era of Impunity. This is how things should be done. Baba Laz uku ndiye kutsogolera dziko

  6. Zomvetsa chisoni, especially ukamaona anthu ena amasangalala ndi zimenezi nkumati vote for dpp, kaya mukumvano bwanji mumtimamo?

  7. As long as we hear the end of these arrests its all good. some of these people have their friends in the high places so as of now lets see.

  8. Call all bidders and ask them what happened and what development took place. In the first instance there was no need to buy this van since MBS already had similar equipment readily available

  9. Tonse arresting every Tom Dick and Harry. Charges do not follow. Looted government funds are not recovered. Result of this will be President Chakwera being considered as dictator or tribalist. Better arrest, charge and recover the stolen resources. Others in Tonse will not be held responsible and will be seen as true democrats.
