Silver barred from Kamuzu Stadium over juju beliefs

Tension is brewing ahead of Saturday’s TNM Super League encounter between Escom United and Silver Strikers in the battle for the title. On Friday, Mighty Wanderers top fan Yona ‘Green’ Malunga led a group of people to bar Silver Strikers from training at Kamuzu Stadium .

After Azam Tigers and Blantyre United game at Kamuzu Stadium, Zambia Womens National soccer team came to have the feel of the pitch ahead of their Equatorial Guinea 2012 Womens Qualifiers game with Malawi on Sunday.

But when Silver Strikers players were seen entering into the stadium to train at the same venue, militant Malunga mobilised his fellow fans to block the Bankers from training.

Malunga told the Bankers: “We cannot allow you to train here because you want to plant juju here. Our team is still in contention and there is no way we can allow that.”

Silver Strikers officials tried to plead with the police and Malunga but to no avail.

Assistant coach for Silver, Hellings Mwakasungula told Nyasa Times: “We came to jog at the stadium but despite refusing us permission, we are set for the crunch tie.”

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said:” We received a call from Silver begging that they wanted to use Kamuzu stadium to train ahead of the match but Escom United as hosts refused.”

He also said that it was between the clubs to agree. Escom officials said Silver refused them to train at their stadium when they visited Lilongwe.
