Silver Strikers win title: Malawi TNM Super League

Silver Striker held its three-point margin atop the Super League by beating Kamuzu Baracks 1-0  on Sunday in a tense Lilongwe derby  at Civo Stadium before a sizeable crowd .

The bankers needed the full points to go three points clear ahead of their title challengers Big Bullets, who now have to win their last league game against Red Lions at by a 10-goal margin and hope that Silver lose their closing encounter against Mighty Wanderers- a tall order if not impossible mission.

With the win, Silver have 58 points from 27 games, three points ahead of Bullets, who also have an inferior goal difference of 28 against Silver’s 38.

Silver is  the only team to win the TNM Super League title a week before the end of the season.

With their victory on Sunday, the Bankers are now the only team to defend the TNM Super League title as well as winning a record fourth title since the mobile phone service provider took over sponsorship in 2006.

Midfielder Frank Banda set the celebrations’ tone in the 36th minute when he headed in a well floated cross by Davie Moya.

Striker Rodrick Gonani would have buried the game in first half added time but he shot wide with only Kamuzu Barracks goalkeeper Lehman Nthala at his mercy.

Both teams had scoring chances in the last half but there was no change on the score-line as youthful referee Joseph Zimba blew his final whistle.

KB coach Kenwood Nkhoma, whose side has now concluded its league assignments with 39 points from 28 games said he was not disappointed with his team’s performance.

“It was a good game only that we conceded that goal in the first half.

“Being our first time to play in the Super League, I am happy with the way we have performed and we will now start focusing on next season,” said Nkhoma.

His counterpart Franco Ndawa was on a cloud nine, declaring that he would have a luxury to feature a youthful side in the last game against Wanderers:

“I’m happy we have now silenced the ganyu fans. We only need a point in our final game against Wanderers and I’m going to feature a youthful side,” said Ndawa.

In another league game played at Nankhaka ground, Red Lions defeated Blue Eagles 2-1 to dislodge Wanderers from the fourth position. The Lions now have 46 points from 27 points, one point ahead of the Nomads, who have a one game cushion over the soldiers.
