Skint in days: Survey exposes Malawi’s payday-to-poverty crisis

Malawian workers are burning through their entire monthly salaries in as little as three to seven days, according to a damning new survey that lays bare the crushing financial pressure gripping households across the country.

The eye-opening study, carried out this month by Human Resources expert Bright Limani, found alarmingly high rates of salary depletion in the immediate aftermath of payday — sparking fresh concern over how ordinary Malawians are expected to survive for the remaining weeks of the month.

Bright Limani: Most Malawian workers spend salary within a week of payday, survey finds

The research, which examined salary survival among Malawian workers, drew on a population of 752 people, with 378 respondents forming the sample, and employed mixed research methods to arrive at its startling conclusions.

Limani pinpointed a toxic combination of factors driving the rapid disappearance of wages: rock-bottom salaries, a tangle of multiple loans, crushing financial obligations, poor money management habits, and a dangerous over-reliance on a single source of income.

In a bid to stem the crisis, Limani urged workers to diversify their income streams, sharpen their skills to boost their chances of landing better-paid work, and adopt far stronger personal financial management practices.

The findings paint a deeply worrying picture of household finances in Malawi — where, for countless workers, payday appears to offer little more than a fleeting few days of financial breathing space before the money runs dry once again.
