The scholarship is part of a long time partnership between the Standard Bank and LUANAR.

The bank provides scholarships to outstanding students in the field of agriculture.

Speaking on Friday during the presentation of the scholarships Standard Bank’s Head of Marketing Thoko Unyolo said education is a key to unlocking a bright future but it comes at a price of both money and time, money to buy books and pay the tuition and time to fully attain the education.

“At Standard Bank we realise that there are no quick to be made. It works like this; when you sow a seed you wait until it becomes a plant, this plant bears fruits and fruits becomes ready and ripe for harvesting,

Similarly Standard Bank is investing in youth education now that the country can reap the full benefits in the future,” said Unyolo.

Unyolo added that at Standard Bank they are investing in agriculture because they realise that Malawi’s economy is agriculture based.

“in order to sustain productivity of the sector, Malawi needs an appropriate and ready skills base. It must be ready to educate and train the youth in the field. This is a task that Luanar has been fulfilling since its foundation as constituent college of University of Malawi,” she said.

Luanar’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Emmanuel Kaunda said there many students who are lacking money for tuition and other needs at the school and Standard Bank’s gesture will help the three students to be able to finish their tertiary education.

“Challenges of students failing to raise tuition fees and money for other expenses is more real than it appears. The situation is so bad that even some of the students go without food for days,

“I am very grateful with what Standard Bank has done to the three students who will be able to concentrate on their studies,” said Professor Kaunda.

One of the beneficiaries of the scholarships Chifuniro Kalawang’oma, a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology student, said the scholarship is of great importance to him as he will be able to continue with his education.

“The scholarship is of great importance to us looking at the background we had. The scholarship will assist them to sustain themselves at the school,” he said.
