Ten Malawi police officers arrested for stealing

Police in Malawi’s central district of Salima have arrested ten police officers for allegedly stealing government equipment at a Green belt Initiative site in the district, police officials have confirmed.

National police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo told a local radio on Tuesday that the officers who were guarding the site last month, allegedly went away with iron sheets and welding machine last month.

“Yes the officers have been arrested after authorities at the site lodged a complaint over the missing equipment,” she says declined to mention the names saying this would jeopardize ongoing investigations.

Statistics show that the arrest of the ten now brings to 16 the number of police officers arrested within a month on allegation of theft after four were arrested in Chitipa and two in Mangochi.

  40. Shame. Wapolisi (a reader, comment No. 22) has just managed to tell the nation what many of us have been suspecting all along – that in Malawi, police officers are above the law. How come Wapolisi knows exactly what is going to happen to his fellow officers? He knows EXACTLY how the issue is going to be handled, and that at the end the arrested officers are simply going to be transferred elsewhere. How does he know this? Because these are the assurances they are given by their bosses as they go about stealing from people. They are assured of protection from above. How do you like that piece of revelation Mr. Inspector General? Wawululatu uyu! This raises enough interest in people like me to follow the issue closely to see if the whole MPS is indeed going to fulfill what Wapolisi has PREDICTED. Too much thieves here in Kasungu, armed robberies, robbery with violence, etc. But eversince, these criminals have never been identified, it’s always been transpired that police officers are involved. We can’t rule out these serious allegations, let the higher authorities interveneand investigate about this. Filling stations have been heavily hit in Kasungu but their investigations are in limbo just because they are accessories to.
