Thoko Kamanga crowned Malawi News Model 2011

Lilongwe’s Thoko Kamanga (22) was on Friday night crowned Malawi News Model of the Year.

Kamanga, participating in a beauty contest for the first time, is currently studying Business Management at Malawi Polytechnic.

She took over the title from Gladys Kumbatira (20).

Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL), publishers of the Daily Times, Weekend Times, Malawi News and the Sunday Timesnewspapers introduced the modeling competition in 2006 as one way of giving Malawian girls the opportunity to launch their modeling careers.

The glittering event took place at Sunbird Mount Soche hotel’s Njamba Room with 12 beautiful models characterised with tall and short heights fighting for one of the country’s top crowns.

The first princess position went out to Tadala Itaye (23) while Pergy Mwanguku (19) was chosen second princess. Other two girls that made it to the Top 5 were Niffat Lokosang (20) and Daisy Chilemba (19) who was also selected miss personality.

Following an introduction, the models got on the ramp dancing before parading in tradition, sports, and evening wears, dressed by Cathy Kamthunzi, Clemo Sato, Lili Alfonso and Chiku Gondwe.

Apart from the parades and other activities on the ramp, patrons were also entertained by awe-inspiring performances by Piksy, Blak Jak, Rina, Renegade and The Elements Dance Crew, who also dished out the pageant’s colloborated theme song.

Some of the guest speakers included outspoken president of the Chancellor College Academic Staff Union, Dr Jessie Kabwila-Kapasula, who advised the contestants and Malawian young women to “be ambitious and stay focused”.

The winner in this year’s model of the year went home with K150,000 while first and second princesseses carted K100,000 and K70,000 respectively.

Malawi News Model of the Year 2012 will take place in December as announced at the event.
