Thyolo villagers clash with Malawi Police: Three killed

A group of irate villagers in Thyolo district took the law into their own hands when they overpowered police officers and broke into a cell where they released two suspects and later killed them.

The incident occurred at Thukuta Police Unit  last Sunday where the two deceased were detained for allegedly beating to death, earlier in the day, a man at a drinking joint.

Our source said two camps were drinking at Nthomondo village when an argument ensued on an undisclosed matter that ended up in a fight.

In the course of the fight one of the imbibers, Patrick Masha, was badly assaulted and died on the spot.

Spokespersons for Southern Region Police as well as Thyolo Police Station spokesperson Edith Likaka were not readily available to authenticate the story.

But according to Nyasa Times sources at Thyolo Police who refused to be named, after the death of Masha two suspects were picked for interrogation by officers from Thukuta Police.

But moments later the deceased friends plus other villagers raided the station demanding the release of the two to deal with them.

After police refused to release the suspects, the angry mob forced-open the cell and pulled out the accused, Ellaton Maguza, 33, and 32-year-old Maxwell Mapuya.

The mob then took the accused to the very same spot (drinking joint) where their friend was killed and assaulted them physically before they both died on the spot.

After assaulting the two to death, the group reportedly proceeded to demolish five houses at Malota village where the two came from.

Police are currently hunting for the suspects who fled immediately after the incident and are still at large.

All the deceased hailed from Namaundi village, TA Nsabwe in the district.

Meanwhile, Likaka confirmed, irate villagers from Namaonde Village in Traditional Authority Thukuta in Thyolo went on rampage last Sunday as they overpowered a police unit in the area, took away two murder suspects and murdered them using hoe handles.

Thyolo police spokesperson said this followed a wrangle which ensued at a drinking place in the district.

Likaka said four people from Maloto Village in T/A Mlolo in Nsanje went for beer drinking at Thomondo Village in T/A Thukuta and a fight erupted which resulted in Nsanje group killing 1 from Thyolo and 2 suspects were arrested.

Lately, a group of other villagers in Malawi’s boarder district of Mchinji burnt down a police unit after they arrested some suspect.
