Time to write epitath for Malawi Congress Party?

Are we seeing the beginning of the end of Malawi Congress Party (MCP)? That is the question.

Leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera and his Malawi Congress Party legislature Joseph Njobvuyalemba: All is not well

But there is no question about the fact that Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership and personality have irreparably damaged the MCP. The fact that State vice president Saulos Chilima who has no party, no grassroots structures, no clear vision can infiltrate MCP and buy out such a large number of MPs tells us one thing. Chakwera is not in control of the party. Things have fallen apart and the center cannot hold anymore.

However, let us put one thing on record. The real political muscle grabbing MPs from MCP is not Chilima as such. It is actually Speaker Richard Msowoya. It is Msowoya who has been inviting MPs to his office and recruiting them for movement. It is also Msowoya who has the money for buying MPs and not Chilima. Msowoya (a Nyakusya by tribe) is the hidden factor in the equation of the Chilima movement.

Msowoya has done with MCP what Chilima wanted to do with DPP but grossly failed and chickened out. At the time Chilima was chickening out of DPP, we all clearly remember Chilima’s famous words: “I don’t want to fight the owners of the party.” Chilima suddenly saw that he was fighting a solid DPP where keys founders and trustees were still solidly guarding the party.

In contrast, the Chilima movement has found an MCP where the veterans who have laboured and suffered for the Party for 24 years the MCP has been in Opposition were already pushed, marginalized and discarded by Chakwera. This is how Chakwera’s Convention has killed MCP.

The MPs who are drifting to the Chilima side are only escaping a sinking ship. Now let us examine exactly how Chakwera killed MCP.

  • The first blunder Chakwera made was that he is a political tenant who tried to kick out the landlord of the house. Chakwera was recruited by John Tembo, and it was Chatinkha who facilitated the recruitment while Moses Khombe introduced Chakwera to chiefs and grassroots of the party. But Chakwera was so blindly power hungry, and so blindly obsessed with ambition that he marginalized Tembo and started purging anyone who was a threat to him.
  • The second blunder Chakwera made was to reduce MCP from a national party to a district organization. In his mistaken belief that MCP is a Chewa party, Chakwera pushed out the Ngonis of Dedza and Salima (because he feared a John Tembo dynasty) and ended up being surrounded by his Lilongwe homeboys. That is the point when Jessie Kabwila, Felix Jumbe and Juliana Lunguzi became enemies for Chakwera. At the same time, Chakwera also marginalized old guards like Njobvuyalema, Belekanyama and Foloma Mwale because they too were a threat. Chakwera gets threatened by anyone with better knowledge, skills and experience than him because he suffers from an innermost confidence crisis. By the end of the day, Chakwera is a coward.
  • The third blunder Chakwera made was to violate the MCP Constitution. This is the Constitution that has kept and guarded the party throughout its troubled times of being in position from the time of Bakili Muluzi to the present time. Killing the Party Constitution is as good as killing the Party because the constitution is the spirit and soul of the party.
  • The fourth blunder Chakwera made was to sell the party to Sidik Mia, a complete outsider who invaded and hijacked the MCP NEC with his own team from People’s Party. That K200 million that Chakwera received from Mia sold Malawi Congress Party to a stranger who has never been part of the history of MCP. Now it is this stranger who is commanding the shots in MCP. Mia can afford to dissolve a committee in Mchinji and a committee in Jessie Kabwila’s constituency without the knowledge of Chakwera. Mia convenes his own meetings at Halima Daudi’s home and other venues without involving political party structures whatsoever. The most disheartening part is that while  Chakwera is identifying MP shadow candidates, Mia is also planting his own shadow MPs in the same constituencies. This is chaos.
  • The fifth blunder Chakwera made was, with total disregard of the Party Constitution, Chakwera fired district and regional governors who have been _de facto_ custodians of the Malawi Congress Party since the fall of Kamuzu Banda. Chakwera is a President of the party who has divorced himself from the center and severed himself from the roots of the very party he is leading.

The result of the situation analysed above is that there is loss of leadership and direction in the party. Chakwera has lost his command. Yet, everyone is looking for leadership. Some follow Mia. Others follow Chakwera. Some follow Msowoya (who I selling MCP to Chilima movement). But the district and regional governors do not trust any of the three because all they want is to restore the glory of the once mighty MCP.

This confusion has come from Chakwera’s blunders. Chakwera is a self-doomed character obsessed with blind ambition for power. He is like a blind dragon that steps on everyone to his doom. Unfortunately, Chakwera’s fall has taken down Malawi Congress Party as well.

  1. Excellent analysis. How can the most aged party on the land call for convention using whatsapp?
All the MCP landlords are now tenants. All tenants from PP are now landlords. Owners of MCP are mere committee members. Chipani chapita ichi.

  2. You don’t know MCP period, yours are dreams please wakeup from slumber MCP his year this time is on the move you can not afford to disturb.

  3. Mia is a hard worker.Tikuziwa Poti ndiwakummwera mumaona ngati a lowa Mbava United.Ndiye mulira simunati Anthu ozikonda inu Mitundu ina simuwatenga ngati Amalawi.

  4. Achina David Makasu: apa ndiyetu mwaitha nkhani basi. Utakhala mulandu tingati mwaugamula.

Your piece flows with logic, like sweet honey. The evidence is convincing, and supports the conclusions beautifully. It is like you were a police investigator and you infiltrated MCP, but I suppose you are just a good investigative journalist. NOT a speculator, as some of these MCP “hommies” would accuse you of being.
I couldn’t agree with you more about Mia and his “cousins” having engineed a silent coup detat in MCP, right under the nose of oChakwera.
MCP is now Mia’s Party (on short notice to boot) … NOT even Kamuzu Banda’s Party anymore.
Chakwamba must be turning in his grave, Baba oTembo stomach must be churning very loud. And oChakwera doesn’t even know that this is happening. Why? Because he’s clergy first. Their games are played differently, and by different rules, but he doesn’t realize the difference. In short, he’s lost on field, running around chasing the ball Mia doesn’t even want to pass to anyone, including oChakwera.
However, I must say, I think the trajectory is downhill, but slowly, for MCP. And no party should assume great advantage at this juncture yet.
But the difference to watch is there are NOT strong personalities who are proven problem solvers in MCP. (oChakwera kicked them out!) And that is why the party’s problems fester for long. Again, oChakwera’s fault.
For once, though, we can partake in schandenfreude! MCP often laugh at other Parties undergoing even minor challenges.

  5. Thanks to Mr David Makasu. We still need MCP at this point. We will vote for Chakwera as we sort out some of the issues you have raised along the way! It seems you a movement supporter and that you do not know your left and right! That’s your problem.

  6. I see! Ambiri mukulemba nyansi are Multiparty children, you were born after 1994! Ask your mothers what was there in the 80’s.

    1. MCP adherents: Please have sympathy, and show empathy for who suffered under your dictator Kamuzu.

  9. Indeed some can seek black when it white – koma ndiye mulipidwa zambiri KKKKKKKKKKK I!

  10. Why should Chakwera be blamed when the people were elected into positions by delegates at the convention?

  11. Keep up with your maloto a uchumbawo……………….!!

  13. Zopusa zenizeni izi. Whydon`t you talk about a party that is being led by family and a president who is near the end of his life? A president who spends most of the time sleeping? This article is a waste of time and no one can read it.

  14. This is hate write up. Whether you like it or not Chakwera is the only hope and credible candidate come 2019. This is DPP propaganda but know kuti amalawi ambiri azindikira kuba kwa DPP ndi umphawi wawo. Be professional write factual articles. Ife we want Chakwera not Madala or the baby.

    1. Akutuma et?? You and the entire of your household will perish together with the enemies of God!

  15. Another article from a dull guy, one who can not understand his own country. Pretence will kill us Malawians.

  16. It is this type of thinking which is destroying our political parties and the country at large. When you say, I am the owner of the party, there we fail. Unlike DPP,UDF,AFORD and PP,Malawi Congress Party has no owner. Let me school this writer, had it been Muluzi did not handpick Bingu from his UP, there would not be the party called DPP. Muluzi should be blamed for sidelining UDF diehards at the convention. Patricia Kaliati was in the forefront informin DPP in 2005 while Peter was in the USA. If DPP has the owner, then its Patricia Kaliati not Peter Muthalika.

  17. You received money to write this and you call yourself a journalist???????????????? and your boses are happy with this poorly framed article???

  18. This article lacks credibility. You could have done a lot of research kapena ndinu alendo ku Malawi? Mukudziwa mmene ndalama ikuvutila? Ntchito zikusowa and your DPP government is not even concerned. Whether you like it or not we are changing government come May 2019. We are completely tired of this government and leadership.

Do we all need to join politics in order to put food on the table? Do your research properly and you will agree zinthu sizikuyenda kuno ku Malawi. Go in our town ma business sakuyenda and then mukumanena pa MBC kuti chuma chikuyenda bwino ku Malawi, which part of Malawi?

In my view what Chakwera is doing is to make MCP a party for the whole country and not for Chewas or for central region.

Don’t ever again waste our time reading your amateur/novice writing. Do your research thoroughly.

    1. That’s the scary part James Phiri. Malawi has so many of “David Makasu” in our midst. This is why the country isn’t going anywhere in terms of lifting its people from dire poverty. malawians are single-handedly killing their own country through their choice of political leaders. But then, we have a big part of the voting population which is uneducated, unaware, unexposed, delinquent and extremely poor. Malawi needs serious spiritual intervention.

  19. Who told you Msowoya is Nyakusya by tribe? is it necessary to include his tribe in your useless write up?

  20. Thats where you are getting it wrong Mr David Makasu as you seem to have personal hatred against Chakwera as a politician and leader of Malawi Congress Party. You are exagerating issues in MCP. Do you know when did Richard Msowoya join MCP? When he was chosen as a running to Chakwera in 2014 elections, was he not new in MCP????? Richard Msowoya is selfish and a liability to MCP, someone who did not want competition as he wanted Chakwera to impose him to the vice presidency of the party which you would have also faulted if it went like that. Leave MCP issues as you a DPP sympathiser. The Kaliwo/Msowoya tactics is the work of DPP and every one knows that. They thought themselves are clean by bringing divide and rule tactics spearheaded by the two selfish politicians not knowing the same will happen to their party. DPP is busy paying these people with money stolen from govt. MCP under Chakwera is easy to and campaign for than the MCP which was under JZU who everyone associates with the atrocities during the one party system. Take it or leave Mr Makasu, MCP is better now under Chakwera than the previous leaders including Chakuamba.

  21. Some of the writings we get from some people leave a lot to be desired, For your own information majority of Malawians have already made up their minds that they voting for Chakwera, no amount of damage writing will sway them. DPP is a divided party and is not unified because greed, theft, poor leadership style with no vision at all and corruption. If you listen the state vice president you hear his own version of the story on how rotten DPP is. The messages are real and have impacted on majority of poor Malawian who now feel that the only way is vote APM out of government.

Chakwera is very calm and composed, if you talk of Msowoya he has politically miscalculated the target, as we stand now he has no soil under his feet. MCP is now much stronger with coming in of Mia and has made significant in roads in the south and eastern regions.

    Just wait for May 2019

  22. It is clear from the first sentence that this article has been written by a boy from Ngolongoriwa village. Full hate and biased opinions against Chaakwera and our beloved MCP. Any one with eyes can see that MCP as a party has gained a lot since 2014 and will face the depleted DPP Madala team, the confused babies with the energy we have never seen before. You think Chilima and his church politics will go any further? The guy is preaching about draining the swamps and yet he is sorrounded by worst swamps. The guy is lamenting that Madala is sorrounded by beasts and he is also completely sorrounded by murder suspects and thieves. Any Malawian of good will can actually see that it is ONLY in MCP where the hope of Malawians is. Who can trust Madala team, Babies camps???

  23. Your writings are very strange. Which MCP MPs have joined Chilima movement? You are making several unfounded claims. Its a shame that we have people like you who hate progress. Just join Chilima Movement.

  24. “Chilima suddenly saw that he was fighting a solid DPP were key founders and trustees were still solidly guarding the party” SURE? You write as you do not live in this country. Maybe you don’t. Just one question. What was Patricia Kaliati in DPP?

  25. Take it or leave it. I think the biggest of Chakwera’s blunders is pairing with Mia and co-opting PP rejects. You would have to be blind not to see how Mia and his wife have overtaken MCP and are treating the party as part of their business empire. This is while Chakwera is sidelining diehard MCP supporters. Msowoya and Chilima are just taking advantage of a dire situation.

    1. Word Umo. MCP supporters cannot swallow this. Bitter medicine…actually Chakwera himself said MCP won’t allow recycled politicians. Alas! Mia is very recycled. Has been in UDF, DPP, PP and now MCP…gosh! A man who left bingu’s dead body in the house in search for a position in PP! The worst choice for a vice president of the party…
I had hope in MCP to take this country to the development we need but the disorganization in the party has reached levels that are detrimental to this country’s progress. They are very disorganized that they were in 2014. Better take that and mend things before it’s too late anyway

    1. Rejection of sound advice has always proved destructive. Somebody warns you of a ditch on the road ahead and you curse them instead of listening slow down and be alert. When a man is dying the first sign is loss of hearing sense. Better take the advice and do a self-check

  26. You hate Chakwera so much. You spent all this time to tell us about Chakwera? Are you MCP yourself or part of Chilima movement?

      1. This so called David Makasu is stupid mathako pano, osangonena kuti DPP siikugona tulo ndi Sidik MIa kulowa ku MCP, DPP ikanati chani Sidik MIa akanalowa chipani chawo mkananena kuti mwalakwisa koma poti walowa ku MCP nde zakuwawanitu hehehehde zitsiru za DPP mavi yino 2019 munya muona tili nanu nanu MCP yalowa kwanuko basi moti athu mkutethedwa kwambiri ndi MCP dont put Msowoya and Chilima in your selfish mind its none of your business, zikukupezanitu kubwera kwa Mia inu ngati chipani chanu chabwino limbikira kulima kumunda wanu, why busy looking at someone”s garden while you have the same garden, hehehehede upezeni mtima mesa mumatumbwa kuti kwmwera ndi kuchipinda kwa dpp sono khoswe walowa bwanji kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
