Times TV presenter Brian Banda gets criticisms over politician Msonda interview

Times television celebrated and maverick presenter Brian Banda continue to get a barrage of criticisms in the way he handled his interview with politician Ken Msonda, two days after the interview was aired.

Msonda (left) and Brian Banda had a showdown on Times interview

The 30 minute clip of the interview has gone viral on social media and most people feel Banda failed to handle the interview as he asked personal questions and made personal remarks such as that Msonda was too poor to afford an air ticket.

Some people even suggested Banda, who served as press officer for former president Joyce Banda, solicited questions from Peoples Party (PP) officials to embarrass Msonda, the former PP publicist who has now defected to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Suzgo Chitete, a journalist with Malawi Broadcasting Corporation wrote on Facebook: “BB (Brian Banda)-Msonda interview provides a timely journalism lesson that we need to check our emotions and political excitement in the course of duty because at the end of the day credibility suffers.

“BB is a talented guy and is usually good at what he does, I hope he will take the feedback kindly and learn a thing or two.”

Eunice Chipangula, a veteran broadcaster shares on her Facebook wall that television and radio presenters should not be emotional against the interview, do not throw personal attacks and do not engage in shaming or embarrassing sort of.

“A personal question only rises when the position an interviewee is holding requires accountability or integrity and that the question is relevant to public interest prevailing at that particular point in time,” says Chipangula.

She says a question must be relevant to fish out issues that can be beneficial or important to the listener/viewer.

“Even if an interviewee insults you, don’t shoot back, continue with your relevant questions and do not allow yourself to be dragged to another path during the interview,” says Chipangula.

She says even if an interviewee responds in a way to divert the interview or engage you in a verbal battle, the one to be blamed in the end is the interviewer.

Banda and Msonda clashed several times during the interview with TV presented accusing Msonda of joining the DPP because of poverty whilst Msonda accused Banda of being used by PP officials.

Dawn Gowa Nyasulu, a distant relation to Msonda said the maverick politician cannot be described as poor by all standards.

Amadziwana awa ndipo ndi amodzi kikkkkk PP inakumana that’s why zikuoneka ngati personal issues.

  2. Banzo says:

I hope we have the journalist body that takes an action when someone personalize the interview. I suggest Brian deserve a penalty. Otherwise he will keep on taking Malawians citizen for granted. Being TV Presenter doesn’t mean you own the whole Malawi. I have been watching his interview, I think he deserve to be politician not TV presenter. He is disgrace to Malawian journalist body. He need to repent.

  3. Misheck M'bwazi says:

Honestly I didn’t expect Eunice Chipangula would come up with such a constructive advice considering
the way she behaved when she was at MBC. I am really surprised that today Eunice has known and realised that every work has its ethics which need to be followed. If only you could have been doing this whilst at MBC you could have been the best journalist ever. For your information people hated you because of the way you conducted yourself when UDF was in gov’t no wonder where you are now

  4. Austin Gama says:

I think people dont understand. Brian be encouraged. You are still professional. You did what is right. These people must be put to book. And what u did is the only way. Maintain the pace. Malawi yufuna anthu amphanvu ndi olimba ngati iwe kuti awombole dzikoli mu poor politics and governance. Be blessed and long live Brian Banda.

  5. Emagones says:

I like Brian for his courage to pin point politicians on issues of national interest. I like him for his strong character . But honestly he is also a human being who is subject to gooffe at times. If the clip quoted above is a true reflection of how the interview went , then I have no regret to say that Brian gooffed big time. I have noted several times that he is at times out order – becoz of his political emotions, he sometimes asks personal questions which are not in the interest of the public. Every person has his or her own right to chose which group he should belong to and one does not become a devil by joining a group which someone doesnt like. Brian has become more of a Politician than a journalist , its like he is a politician hiding in the skin of a Journalist. Thank God Nsonda is very smart and indeed anyone who wants to conduct an interview with adada Ken must pray and fast for 1 week becoz that guy is something – BB please learn something from this otherwise I like you.

  6. Makalanyani says:

Brian wagoofer apa, try to ask these politician issues of national interest.
    A Brian mwatani kod?
Mpaka kumunena munthu kut ndi oshota.
Ntchito yomwe mumagwira ndiyabwino koma apapa mwachita zopusa pokhazikika pa ndale ndi mafuso a upandu.
Muthokoze kut Msonda ndi opemphera sanakutukwaneni koma akanakhala Mulli ukanalida tsiku limene lija.

  7. Atate says:

Brian Banda is too bitter. He hates DPP so much to the extent that he can do anything to shame DPP politicians at the expense of professionalism. This has backfired because Malawians can not be fooled. If Brian likes politics, he should just join frontline politics.

  8. Ndevu says:

After analysing the interview, there are questions that we should ask ourselves like “Why did BB ask Msonda those questions?” BB was trying to unmask the today’s politicians for malawians to see what moves policians make when things are not well on their side. A comment like”tikudziwa munali oshorter” this comment was put forward to extract the motive Msonda was found in DPP not kumuchititsa manyazi. I know Msonda personally and I also know what was happening to him before joining PP and after joining it. When party lost the elections,Msonda life changed to where it belonged before joining PP and he knew that things would be even worse if he didn’t do anything hence the move to DPP. Despite that the interview went too personal, critically, people who are able to think without leaning towards any party would be able to get something from the interview. Msonda knew exactly what BB meant when he said ndalama mwazitenga kuti zondigulira ticket ya ndege. We should try as much as possible to think critically whenever there is an argument.

  9. Mmihavani says:

Vuto la a mtolankhani a Form 4 yotsokera with 4 sittings ya mayeso ndi limeneli; they don’t understand professionalism. Brian Banda is an angry PP stalwart working at an angry MCP-owned newspaper under the angry editor Kasakura under their angry boss Chikadya. These guys are not independent and objective. Asanduka akaziotche. These guys have gone overboard and are damaging the credibility of their radio. This overzealousness doesn’t pay. Ask Lucius Banda and Milanzi.

  10. Mapuyamurupare says:

Well done BB for stimulating debate about journalism in Malawi
You are really a PROFESSIONAL Brian.
Keep The fire Burning BBC or VOA basi.

  11. Safunana says:

Ine clip yo simnaivere koma ngati zili zimene mwatumiza mwambamuzi nde kuti nawo Nsonda anapita ndi kampeni kumphasa coz kumenekonso nao sikuyankhula kapena kuyankha kwa munthu wa profile ngati a Nsonda. Keep the fire burning BB. Akunama amenewo. Kugwira ntchito ku State house sindiye kuti ndiwe wachipani ayi. Taona ambiri akuchotsedwa kumene kuja nakayamba ntchito kwina enanso boma. Bwanji samakhala ma regional governor kapena ma district governor. Bb went there as profeffional not a politician. More fire bb.

  12. bushala says:

We know that BB is a PP member that’s why he came up with insults questions against nsonda. let me remind him, this is Malawi a party that has booted out in Government will not rule this country again no matter what. Ask mcp there just westing there time and efforts.nanji ka party ka mthumba ka Brian

  13. lesson should be learnt Brian.Mukhale ndi chipani chotsatila koma ukakhala journalist umafunika kukhala ochenjera kaulitsidwe ka nkhani kuti usaonetse mbali kwenikweni. Nchito yako yili ngati ya m’busa. m’busa amatsatila chipani koma ku church samalankhula dala mokondela chipani chake akatero mpingo umabalalika. Times TV azifunaso ma kasitoma a DPP kuti apeze ndalama zokulipila salale. watch out! Mabwana ofuna buziness kuti ukula akhoza kukuchotsa ntchito

  14. wadabwa says:

of all the people why interview msonda he had a plan to frustrate Brian cause Brian isn’t DPP and he is lucky high DPP officials grant him interviews the best was with dausi and chidanti the questions these people would still have made the interview a good one but you ask the likes of msonda very vocal you are in for trouble next time pull up your socks

  15. Raymond says:

Lets wait and see how the bwanas at Times will handle this situation.
Brian had goofed. Wachititsa manyazi Times.

  16. mpho says:

am not a politician neither taking sides on the interview outcome but am here by to comment against Brian Banda for poor standards of his action against the rights of mr nsonda….in one hand or the other.
case must be opened against him apo ayi ndimmenya ndekha

  17. CZ 1982 says:

Ng’oma zolilisa zakumana but reading from the above bb amafunsa udyo anthu akamakuchemelela umaonangati nasakuti kuti aziti ndi a bb

  18. Yahya Jammeh says:

Brian Banda must know that every human being has their own weaknesses and strengths. Please don’t follow what Kasakula is doing because he has something to fall back on should things go wrong at Times Group. He has the qualifications to find another job elsewhere so easily and continue to live a happy life. Brian, are you not the one who was booted out at MBC for lying that you possessed MSCE when you failed to produce it when Administration asked you to do so to keep in your personal file? If I am wrong tell us why you left MBC and joined Capital FM when most broadcasters use Capital FM as a stepping stone to join MBC despite its numerous professional flows? The way you handled the interview clearly revealed that you are not educated nor trained in journalism and you don’t know journalism ethics. I am not at all defending Msonda who by all means is a political rolling stone, but there is no law in Malawi that bars anybody from joining the a political party they want that can benefit them and their families. He is simply exercising his freedom of choice. You don’t know what tomorrow brings, Msonda may seem useless today, but as time goes by he may build some influence and use that influence to lift you up when you are flat on the ground. Now it tells without question why some people do not grant media interviews. The idea of any interview is not to embarrass an individual, but rather to get information and in the case of media interview, the audience will make their own judgement of what they have heard or read about. I will rule Gambia for a billion years.

  19. santana says:

So Brian Banda met his match. This is just the beginning. Malawians have come to know that Brian is just a political stooge. He has never interviewed people on matters of national interest but always politics of bias. We know he is PP and the bruise which Amayi suffered in 2014 affected him so much. He thinks he can revenge that to anyone smelling DPP. The only wise thing Brian should do is to have prorames featuring PP politicians explaining to Malawians what made Amayi lose the votes and what solutions are on the paper so that they come back to power in 2019. Using the TV to insult DPP politicians will achieve nothing, Mr Banda. With this Msonda interview you have been exposed and the small respect you had has completely gone to the dogs. You are a stooge and you will remain so as long as you comment on politics. The interview with Msonda has exposed you Brian, and you will live to remember this interview for the rest of your life.

  20. Angoni says:

A friend sent me a clip of the interview yesterday and I must say I am disappointed with Brian. He was too personal and very partisan in his line of questioning. His dislike of DPP or anyone associated with the party was obvious. Not what I would have expected from a top journalist. This is coming from someone who is not a fan of DPP.
