A picture showing an armed to the teeth Malawi Police officers working as body guards of State Vice President Saulos Chilima has been trending on social media, with many commenting  with excitement on the beefed-up female police officer leading the guards helping protect the VP.

The presidential guards, characteristically armed to the teeth, stood out at the Independence Day celebrations as the President Peter Mutharika had also armed-to-the-teeth guards.

Many people only see the President from a distance at public rallies like Independence Day celebrations or in the news on television.

  6. What a waste of resources, what are these leaders fearing? Malawi people need security against thieves, but see these greedy leaders trying to insulate themselves from their own shadows. It is amazing how poor countries have misguided policies and attention. Develop the country, and stop showing off as if you are the only people in the country. Thieves are killing people and the police is involved, while you live in luxury and exargerated protection

  11. We have such a low esteem of ourselves. It is not surprising we also esteem our country and leaders lowly. Very depressing reality. If you only knew how many undercover security agents surround Obama wherever he goes you would not be making such complaints about the protection for our president. Unfortunately you think only Obama or David C of UK deserves it.

  13. The good part is that death takes both the defenceless and the heavily guarded ones. If it were not so, the earth would have been full of people who are well protected and none of the unprotected ones. Imfa imalowa kumpanda alonda ali pompo, ask Bingu aka Ben Phiri. Our leaders needs protection going by comments from Kabwila until to date they haven’t yer accept the harsh reality of losing election, May be i can agree with Lawi all they see is every thing is slow.   32. Even with such a heavy security, cardiac arrest sneaks into state house and wrecks havoc on people who think are immortal. Why arming yourself as if Malawi is under siege? Even in Burundi it has not reached that far.

  48. During my 15 year stay in RSA, I have never seen Mbeki or Zuma guarded or protected like that. No wonder some presidents are being assassinated by their own bodyguards becoz of this. Imagine they planning a coup and two or three bodyguards supports the coup, is he gona survive?

  49. What are our leaders scared of to command such high levels of security? I am not saying a president must not be protected but there have been other presidents who have never needed protection.

    Jose Alberto ‘Pepe’ Mujica, former president of Uruguay (an equally poor country like Malawi) used to go about without any body guard while state president, drove a VW Beetle, did not stay at the state house but at his wife’s farm. He even donated 90% of his salary to the poor.

    Can our leaders go about without hiding in bullet proof cars, high walls etc at the expense of the poor? Can our leaders donate money to the poor or they would rather milk the government coffers?

    Resolve pertinent issues affecting the people: crime, joblessness, hunger, etc and you won’t need all that security!!!!

  63. I think the person that wrote this just wanted to use the phrase “Armed to the teeth” needless to use it has been used wrongly throughout.

    There was no need for the commentary the picture alone would have told a better story. The comment has just ruined the picture.

    The people that posted it on social media had a one sentence caption and it worked beautifully.

    You are trying to make it make people bad, that’s the problem.

  64. The truth of the matter is that that VP is not protected at all. Maybe it was a ‘show of force’ antic meant to scare people. First, the setting is a wrong one (Malawi, inside the stadium, many security elements present, on independence celebrations). Second, those guards are heavy and cannot respond effectively to any incident. They have knee guards and assault rifles that are not effective for close-quarter reactions. I can bet that those guys sorrounding the VP’s car cannot even run for 1000 metres non-stop. They should have been lightly dressed. Their focus is to protect the VP and whisk him away to safety in case of anything. As it seems, their focus is own protection and not the VP’s. Please take sometime to look at how other VIPs are guarded around the world. Even, in the most dangerous environments of all, Israel, look at how the Prime minister is guarded: by plain-clothed slender young men who are armed to teeth but are flexible enough to react to anything. We are just showing our old-fashioned approach to these things. That is my two tambala worth of advice.

  75. Malawi is a failed state of comedians. Security is not what you see, but what you dont see. Where were they trained in body guarding? They seem just police who were trained how to shoot. That is not body guarding.
