Universal Trading donate Treadle Pumps to flood victim farmers

Universal Trading a local Agri-business company in partnership with a Kenya based KingStart  Company on Monday donated 25 Money Maker Treadle pumps and Hand Pumps worth K2 million to Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development to be distributed to farmers affected by floods in 15 districts.

Speaking after receiving the pumps in Lilongwe, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Allan Chiyembekeza said the donation has come at a right time when his ministry is intensifying preparations in readiness for irrigated crop production season.

“This donation will help farmers especially those that have lost their crops as a result of the floods that have affected some parts of the country,” he said.

He added that the country needs to move the area under irrigation from the current 102,000 to 200,000 hectares over the next few years. “This can only be achieved if such donations continue to come to the ministry.”

The minister therefore requested other companies to come forward and emulate the gesture by Universal Trading Company.

The company’s Marketing Manager, Davison Kumpama said through the modern treadle pumps, farmers from the affected areas will be able to go back to the fields to cultivate.

If a certain part of the country has been affected by calamities, as an Agriculture business company, we are also affected because these farmers are our clients,” he said.

The modern treadle pumps are the improved pumps which can be easily used by farmers, he said.

The Treadle pumps weighing 19 kilograms each can pump 85 litres of water per minute while the hand pump also known as Hip pumps are 5 kilograms each and pumps 35 litres per minute.

That’s a commendable gesture. Keep it up! But it could be better if these pumps are distributed to clubs and not individuals. Well done, Universal Trading. You have demonstrated that you part us.
