Usi Did Not Travel With Entourage—Aide Rubbishes “Fake” Delegation List, Dares Critics to Verify at Airport

A senior aide to Vice President Michael Bizwick Usi has dismissed as fake and malicious a document circulating on social media which claims that the Vice President travelled to the United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Awaza, Turkmenistan, with an inflated entourage—including his wife.

The leaked list, bearing over 40 names under Malawi’s delegation, has sparked public outrage over alleged government waste. Among the names is “Ella Usi – Spouse of Vice President,” fuelling speculation that Usi took family members on the official trip.

But speaking on condition of anonymity, one of Usi’s close aides rubbished the list, insisting that the Vice President only travelled with a lean delegation of 15 officials—none of whom is his wife.

“That list is fake. It is not from our office. The Vice President travelled with only 15 people, all of them government officials with a clear and defined role. Not even his wife is part of the trip,” said the aide.

The aide further challenged those circulating the document to show up at Kamuzu International Airport when the Vice President returns and verify the delegation for themselves.

“If people think we are lying, let them come to the airport and count who steps off the plane. The Vice President has nothing to hide. This kind of propaganda is cheap and unfortunate,” the aide added.

Efforts to get a direct comment from Vice President Usi were unsuccessful, as his phone went unanswered.

The conference in Turkmenistan brings together leaders and stakeholders from landlocked developing countries to discuss solutions to transport, trade, and infrastructure challenges. Usi was delegated by President Lazarus Chakwera to represent Malawi.

The fake list, believed to be doctored from broader conference documents, included names of various civil servants, advisors, and diplomats, some of whom were not part of the Malawi delegation at all.

With Usi expected to return to Malawi later this week, the truth behind the delegation will soon be in full public view.
