Usi risks arrest: Police investigate UTM’s veep GP licence

Malawi Police officers are investigating UTM party vice president Dr Michael Usi for his medical certificate if he is paid up member with Medical Council of Malawi.

Usi touching a patient at Mulanje Mission Hospital while praying for him

Usi is a trained General Practitioner (GP) in medicine and a paid up member with the Medical Council of Malawi but is not practicing.

Police investigations follows Usi’s visit to Mulanje Mission Hospital on Sunday where he cheered the sick.

In one of the ward, Usi, who is also as aspiring candidate under UTM for the Mulanje Central Constituency, pressed his hands to a patient who had complained of his ribs pain.

He did it in full view of the people using his medical knowledge, a move which Police are investigating to effect arrest.

Usi, when contacted by Nyasa Times, said he has heard about the rumours about his impending arrest.

“I have also heard about it but I am not moved at all,” he said.

He said one of the things he is seeking political office is to end politicisation of everything.

Usi, a former country director for Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra) Malawi, holds a doctorate from the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom. He is also widely known by his nickname Manganya, a character in the Tikuferanji series. He is basically an actor and playwright, besides working as a corporate executive.

The UTM vice president is a technocrat with experience in humanitarian work, civil society well educated and with a clean track record in as far as the politics of the country is concerned.

No no no no. No issue here. He was just seeing a patient who will probably or not vote for him. Is Usi a PhD man not an MD? Although both these are doctors, they differ where they come from. With MD you require not less than five years in school continuous learning while with PhD – and these days – you can get it in 6 months. So which is Usi in?

PhD requires you to study and research for 3-8 years. You cannot qualify by handout. You have to defend your doctorate at viva voce. This man sweated as I know how people sweat to get to doctorate

The caption on the picture says “Usi touching a patient at Mulanje Mission Hospital while praying for him”. We need to draw a line here; he was praying for a patient, he wasn’t administering the physical examination. Did he prescribe medication? DPP please stop this childishness, can your president even touch a patient? I bet he can’t even say a word of prayer for himself

Please arrest mwana wa adad who is a medical assistant but fooled the entire dpp that he is a doctor. He was once called Muntharika s doctor that time mintharika was arrested.

They should investigate the qualifications and the entire Malawi will be shocked.

There is a penalty cost which medical council charges one if he is not paid up. It is not a police matter.
This hatred shown by DPP is disgusting

Each and every profession has its rule and regulation. Like it or not, Dr Usi has done an unacceptable practice in medicine. I don’t know whether he was doing that for popularity, but it’s wrong. Even a practising doctor can not examine a patient not his or hers. This is unprofessional, a deliberate mistake. We have had problems of fake doctors and this could be an example. It doesn’t matter you like him politically or personally. If this is indeed true, he will face the justice. We do not dramatize sickness and this is contravening the law. You can be… Read more »

This is not an issue for the police. If any thing the medical council of Malawi is the one that has jurisdiction on this. Not police. Did he inflict any harm to the patient by touching him ?
