UTM increasing parliamentary strength: Kaneka set to join after Dossi

Member of Parliament for Blantyre West Constituency, Isaac Kaneka, has been linked to UTM and that he will join the State Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s led party to boost its numbers in Parliament, Nyasa Times understands.

MP Kaneka: Switching political allegiance

Kaneka was a member of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) but was frustrated by his party during the primaries and won the elections on an Independent ticket.

He later joined DPP and now has withdrawn his membership.

“I am consulting my constituents on my next move,” said Kaneka.

But he strongly hinted on the likelihood of joining UTM.

The development follows UTM’s new catch of Chikwawa West MP Susan Dossi from DPP.

UTM has been wooing independents to bolster its numerical strength.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Mayor Chirwa an independent MP for Mzimba Luwerezi, Ireen Mambale of Balaka south, Joseph Nomale of  Chiradzulu East and Nancy Chaaola of Ntcheu Bwanje, are  also said to be realigning for UTM.

In the May 21 Tripartite Elections, DPP won 62 seats in the 193-seat National Assembly, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and independents got 55 each with United Democratic Front (UDF) getting 10, People’s Party (PP) won five, UTM Party won  four and Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has one.

But UTM welcomed to its benches independent MPs  Alexander Chilikumtima of Ntcheu Bwanje South and and Ntcheu North East legislator Arthur Enoch Chipungu.

UTM Party director of publicity Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the party is gaining more ground.

This is mere dillusion. UTM had 4 MPs after elections and MCP had almost 60. Regardless of the number of ‘change goal’ MPs going to UTM, the party will never come close to MCP. Tangomwani tea apa

Politics is a game of numbers and with 50 plus one a game of alliances. In 2025 utm will have consolidated itself and will need a good partner to go with. It obviously is not MCP which will be trying to to have Laz as president again. I actually see a horrible outcome. MCP will form an alliance with the DPP and UDF to stay in government. Now why would the DPP and UDF choose MCP over UTM. Well, because MCP would have done its first term already and it would be a more attractive partnership than UTM which will… Read more »

I also see UTM, UDF, PP and DPP joining together with SKC as president. Remember these parties have the same roots, will only happen if the corrupt leaders of DPP are in prison.

Look at the number of photos emerging with Awenyes. Chakwera is eating big time. Turned out to be as corrupt and deceitful as Muluzi, Bingu, Mama Corruption Joyce Hilda Banda and Arthur Peter Trillion Mutharika. 6 Presidents all corrupt and thieving. What’s wrong with us Malawians? Well read some of the comments by supporters of SKC. All SKC can do no wrong SKC is our leader and saviour is their message.all blinded by words and not caring if SKC can by his actions make their lives better.

I can see most of independents and some dpp joining utm or mcp. Most independents or dpp MPs are more likely to join utm because of their loathing for Mcp. However, regardless of how many MPs utm gains from this crazy migration, Chilima can’t unseat Chakwera. In fact it is the other way round, skc should be wary of mcp who can easily dump him come 2025. This is mcp govt legally, not tonse alliance govt. My advice to skc is to dismantle utm and join mcp so that at their next convention they elect him as vice to Laz,… Read more »

MCP is not the only party in Malawi, we Malawians choose what we want. Remember it’s 50+1. So if UTM can join DPP with SKC as president, then MCP will be back to where it belongs (opposition). It has taken other parties to help MCP to win, but it seems they have forgotten.

Skc is more likely to join mcp than dpp which threw all sorts of insults at him. No, Laz could have won without the other parties, most of them are just parties by name. Laz has been poling around 1.8m on his own. Actually what Chilima brought to laz victory was just Ntcheu, nothing else. So Laz could have bitten both skc and peter.

Tough for skc. He has to replace Laz as MCp leader when Laz finishes second term assuming he wins again in 2025. Patience is virtual, that is my advice to skc.

Why MPs are joining UTM not MCP? It’s a sign of lack of leadership skills by our English tongue borrowing president. However, I like the Nyau guy due to his patience and ability to appreciate people’s feelings. As for Chilima, leadership is indeed part of his attractive force. Based on my opinion? Chilima is trying to mobilize the arsenal for the preparation of 2025 to defeat Chakwera’s ascension to the next term of office. Watch out Mr Pastor!

Watch out Chakwera this man SKC is gonna wave goodbye to you soon and take over as President. This is what happens when a President goes to sleep on the job. DPP rightly challenging Tonse on campaign promises not kept. Bye bye will come soon enough for the man posing with corrupt Amenye like Sundeed Oil MD – seems you have time to pose for photos but not deliver on promises made. Corrupt leaders.
