Zodiak honour coach Mpulula, John Banda, Blantyre United

Blue Eagles attacking midfielder John Banda and Azam Tigers coach Reo Mpulula have been named Zodiak Radio’s fans choice 2011 player of the year and coach of the year respectively.

Blantyre United was named as team of the year.

Mpulula said he was excited with the honour.

“I thank God for this; I never expected it to happen. It’s good that sometimes you get your job recognized by some people and it encourages you,” said Mpulula.

Leo Mpulula: Coach of the year

One of the nominees for fans choice player for the year, Ishmael Thindwa in an interview with Nyasa Times, congratulated Banda for being named player of 2011.

“I want to congratulate John for winning it, and this was a tough contest. And I feel great to be amongst the nominees,” said Thindwa.

John Banda led his team to end their silverware drought by securing this year’s Standard Bank Cup title. He ended up being a top goal scorer in the tournament.

The midfielder’s fine form also saw him earning a rare national football team call up.

Mpulula has made a name for himself as no nonsense coach, for his bullish character when criticizing match officials, when he feels they have made untidy decision. He also took over struggling Azam Tigers and rejuvenated them side.

Blantyre United, commonly known ‘Mphembedzu za ku Blantyre’, have emerged to be surprise contenders in this year’s TNM Super League title as they have managed to cause upsets to elite teams, like Silver Strikers, Bullets and Moyale.

Zodiak’s initiative aims at appreciating sports personalities for their performance during the year.
