UK Malawians to celebrate Independence Day on July 9 in Northampton
Malawian in the United Kingdom are set to celebrate Malawi’s independence day on Saturday the 9th July in Northampton instead of 6th July the official day of Malawi’s national independence.
According to secretary general of Malawi Association UK (Mauk), Stephenson Mbewe, the event being hosted by Malawi Association Northamption will start with games in the afternoon between Malawi Select team facing Tanzania Select team.
The the function will continue with a reception from 5pm at the Plough Hotel, Bridge Street, NN1 1PF.
The event will cost £25.00 for a three course meal. Kids under 16 years old will pay £5 and the under 12 will be free.
“The function to be held in Northampton is the official celebrations event this year,” said Mbewe.
“ Every year we rotate the official event, it was in Essex last year and the 52 years independence celebrations will this year be held in Northampton,” Mbewe said.
He said they picked Saturday the 9th rather than the 6th because of the general convenience of a Saturday.
MAUK secretary general said the celebrations will be a family event with games for both adults and children.
There will also be other entertainment packages such as DJs and local artists performing.
“ Other similar events are being organised in different cities on different dates at a local level for those who fail to attend the main event,” he said.
Accoridng to MAUK other events elsewhere include a football tournament organised by Malawians in Nottingham on 9th July 2016.
MAUK said the Malawi Manchester Association have also roganised events on 16th July 2016 while Malawi Leicester Association events will be on 23 July 2016.
Some of Malawi focussed events in the year, according to MAUK include a Nyasa Times 10 years anniversary red carpet and black tie Banquet on 27 August 2016 at Hilton Hotel in Leeds.
And MAHECAS annual dinner dance on 29 October 2016 at a venue to be announced.

Sounds like events for the whole year??? However, it’s encouraging that Malawians are striving to be conspicuous as opposed to the past when Malawians opted to join other nation’s events neglecting their own.
