Justice Ansah sworn in as new Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson

The Newly appointed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah was officially sworn in on Friday a week after her appointment at a ceremony held at the Suppreme Court of Appeal premises in the comercial city of Blantyre.

President Mutharika while in USA where he went to attend a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and extended his stay, announced Ansah’s appointment alongside other four high cort judges through the
Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC).

The swearing in ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda.

Speaking after being sworn in, Ansah assured Malawians that she will work hard and without fear or favour and that she will always uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

She therefore called upon for support from all Malawians to ensure smooth running of affairs at MEC.

“I promise to abide by the law and I call for your support so that we work together for the success of MEC and that of our nation” said
Ansah.

In playing his advisory role, Chief Justice Nyirenda urged Ansah to always safeguard public interest and maintain her professionalism.

He also advised the former Malawi’s first female Attorney General to read more on Electoral Laws and the Republican Constitution to fully understand her new role as MEC Chairperson.

Ansah who was born on 11th October 1955 became High Court Judge in 1998 before being appointed Judge of Suppreme in 2011.

Between 2006 and 2011, she served as Attorney General.

Ansah will took over the position on MEC Chairperson following the sudden death of Justice Maxon Mbendera who died after collapsing while in a meeting some months ago.

Ansah’s swearing in comes barely few days after government critics questioned the credibility of her appointment and approval as the man responsible Mutharika was in USA and his right hand was not functioning to sign the approval documents as requested by the laws.
