Malawi send soldiers to Ivory Coast on peace mission
Malawi has sent over 200 strong battalion including about 37 female soldiers to join the United Nations mission in troubled Ivory Coast to help foster peace.
The troops departed after undergoing a training of peace keeping from the United States Government through the Africa Contingency Operations Training and Assistance (ACOTA).
Another group of 235 soldiers will depart on Friday for the same mission in the world’s largest cocoa producing nation which was thrown into turmoil when ousted president Laurent Gbagbo refused to hand over the reins to his long-time opponent President Alassane Ouattara in November 2010 which the United Nations said claimed around 3,000 lives.
“There are 37 female members in this Malawi Battalion deployment,” US embassy said on its website.
The U.S. Government has also provided equipment towards this deployment to Ivory Coast.
Malawian soldiers have previously been sent on peacekeeping missions to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Mozambique, Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia and Kosovo.
