KFC fast-food to open outlet in Malawi
There’s good news for chicken lovers in Malawi, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) of United States which is also in UK plans to open its fast-food outlet in Malawi and six other countries across Africa this year, according to the Wall Street Journal report.
KFC’s parent company, Yum Brands (YUM), plans to add 100 stores on the African continent, as it seeks to tap into a rising middle class and strong economic growth, its general manager for Africa operations said Tuesday.
A Malawian KFC outlet is already being built, according to Keith Warren, Yum’s general manger for Africa.
“We have demonstrated the ability to build a fantastic KFC business . . . in South Africa and . . . [its] neighbouring states,” Warren is quoted as saying.
He said that one of the reasons for KFC’s success is the fact that “chicken on the bone is the primary protein of choice in Africa”.
So Malawians will this year be ordering a Zinger sandwich and a two-piece chicken meal from KFC.
In 2011, KFC outlets were opened in Zambia, Ghana and Kenya. This year, apart from Malawi, KFC stores are already being built in Angola with Tanzania, Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe, Congo and Madagascar to follow, Warren said.
