Moyale through to semis of Airtel Top 8 Cup

Moyale Barracks Football Club booked their place in the semi final line up of the newly launched Airtel Top 8 Cup after thrashing fellow brothers in arms, Mafco, 4-2 in the second leg played on Saturday at Mzuzu Stadium before a sizeable crowd.

Mafco were the first to settle down in the scrappy first half. 15 minutes into the game, Victor Mpinganjira connected with his right foot; a Benard Harawa cross from the left into the net, beating goalkeeper Simeon Harawa in the line of duty for the Salima based soldiers to lead 1 nil.

Ten minutes later, Mpinganjira was again put through by one of his midfielders, but alone facing the goalkeeper, shot against the charging keeper.

Moyale replied a minute before half time when Khuda Muyaba received a floating ball deep inside Mafco’s half, brilliantly beat two approaching defenders in the air (one at a time), before unleashing a thunderous shot from about 35 metres, into the roof of the net. 1-1 it was at half time.

Muyaba was on song again 4 minutes into the second half, sending a volley from outside the 18; into goalkeeper Jailos Kapalamula’s net for the scoreboard to read 2-1 in Moyale’s favour.

Ranken Mwale levelled the score line in the 54th minute when he chipped the ball over the Moyale goalie who had advanced to challenge him.

Moyale went on to score their third goal in the game through substitute Wiseman Kamanga in the 79th minute as a follow up to Lloyd Njaliwa’s shot which was earlier fumbled by the Mafco goalie.

Three minutes to full time, another substitute Zondiwe Munthali sealed the game at 4-2 for the Lions of Kaning’ina.

Speaking after the match, mentor for Mafco FC, Temwa Msuku, accepted defeat and wished Moyale well in the semis.

“Honestly, poor goal keeping has cost us this game. We came to win this game with a good margin and you could see the way we attacked. It’s unfortunate that we are out of the competition but we thank Airtel for staging this tourney. We will work hard in the league so that we can take part in this same competition next season,” concluded Msuku.

The winning coach, Charles Kamanga, thanked God for the victory.

“We never played our game in the first half. But in the second half we were on top of Mafco and I am very happy that we are in the semis. We will prepare thoroughly to meet any team after the draw. We are very hungry for silverware as Moyale Barracks,” added Kamanga.

Moyale were also 2 nil victors at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa in the first leg. They sail through to the semis with 6-2 aggregate.

Khuda Muyaba was voted player of the match and pocketed K50, 000.00 plus a miniature.
