Malawi asks South Africa to extradite Chanthunya

Malawi government has formally asked South African authorities to extradite murder suspect Misozi Chanthunya, arrested Tuesday morning in Rustenburg, in the North West Province of South Africa after a year and months on the run.

Solicitor General Anthony Kamanga, said Ministry of Justice has since asked South African authorities to dispatch Chanthunya to Malawi to answer charges of murdering a pregnant Zimbabwean girlfriend, Linda Gasa -25.

“We have asked for extradition of Mr Chanthunya. I cannot say when he will be in the country because the whole process will depend on the courts in South Africa,” said Kamanga who is Secretary to the Ministry of Justice.

Chanthunya: To face extradition

Malawi’s Inspector General of Police Peter Mukhito also confirmed that they have started the extradition process.

He said Malawi Police are “making arrangements” with their South African counterparts “to extradite him so he can face justice here.”

Chanthunya may fight against extradition process but it will depend on the South African court to determine the case.

The married Chanthunya escaped from Malawi in 2010 after allegedly murdering his Zimbabwean girlfriend who was the second-year Malawi College of Accountancy student.

She was later found entombed in the 34-year-old at a private cottage in the southern resort town of Mangochi.
