Malawian athletes involved in serious car accident
Eleven Malawian athletes were involved in serious car accident on their way from national championship held on Saturday in Lilongwe.
The car, Toyota Fortuner was involved in the accident near accident prone Kamwamba on M1 Road after one of its rear tires snapped causing injuries to all the athletes from Tauka athletics club.
The injured athletes, Godfrey Kamswaswa, Duncan Mwenda, Austin Sukuli, Wema Supiriani and her twin sister Fallace and official Menard Fumulani, were among the injured athletes and were rushed to Ntcheu district hospital for treatment.
On Sunday four of the athletes were referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for further treatment and three of them Andrew Dokotala, Godfrey Kamswamswa and Fallace Supuriano are still in hospital.
According to Tauka athletics club official the accident was shocking to the athletics fraternity. Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) president Godfrey Phiri and general secretary Frank Chitembeya who visited the injured athletes at Queen Central Hospital in Blantyre said they were shocked with the accident.
“This is so sad and AAM is shocked to learn that our athletes were involved in serious car accident on their way from national championship held on Saturday in Lilongwe,” Phiri said.
“We will talk to Malawi National Council of Sports to see how best we can assist the injured athletes who are in the hospital.”
One of the injured athletes Wema Supuriano won gold medal in 800m.
It is not good that all the athletes went in one car. This is called Accumulation of Risk.
IF THE WORSE CAME TO THE WORST, THEY COULD HAVE ALL BEEN KILLED.
That would be a tragic loss.
The same goes for families. Do not let all family members travel in the same car.
