Youth Out Loud radio program goes on air
Youth Out Loud radio program under youth media project run by Timveni with support from UNICEF has finally gone on air.
The radio programs are now aired on Dzimwe Community Radio every Saturday at 15:30pm, Umoyo Radio, Radio Maria at 13:30pm and Timveni Radio.
Speaking in an interview, Youth Media Project Coordinator Ralph Nyirenda said the radio program is aimed at giving adolescents in Mangochi the opportunity to tell their own stories, about child rights issues in their communities, through radio, print and online media.
“The project is focusing on youths in forms 1 to 3, targeting 500 students in the district. 50 young people underwent the first training in basic media skills.
“We identified active young people whom we are producing a radio program with. We took them to radio stations that we have partnered with to have hands-on experience. We have partnered with Umoyo Radio, Radio Maria and Dzimwe Community Radio in Mangochi,” Nyirenda narrated.
He then disclosed that the project’s pilot phase is being implemented in Mangochi district in the southern region of Malawi.
“Youth Out Loud radio program has so many segments such as Zam’makwalala, Talk Point, Msangalutso and Role Model so you can see that everyone in the project is involved in one way or the other.
“I believe that at the end of the project’s first year, young people will be able to identify issues, document and report and even consult relevant authorities within their communities,” Nyirenda explained.
In October, Timveni held the first entry meeting to District Executive Committee (DEC) in Mangochi. The meeting gathered 65 DEC members in the district with an aim of equipping them with information about the project.
In continuation with the Youth Out Loud project activities, Timveni further conducted entry meetings with community leaders in Namwera, Majuni, Mkumba and Monkey Bay. The objective of the meetings was to brief community leaders on Youth Out Loud and therefore stimulates support for the project.
Youth Media Project is an extension of Joint Program on Girls’ Education which is already being implemented in Mangochi.
