PAC endorses 50:50 Campaign for more women in Malawi politics
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC), a quasi-religious body and governance watchdog, has put its full support towards a 50:50 campaign to increase the numbers of women in politics ahead of the 2019 Tripartite Elections.
PAC Chairperson, Dr Felix Chingota declared PAC support during the meeting with The 50-50 Campaign Management Agency, a consortium of civil society organisations (CSOs) running the campaign.
Chingota said PAC recognizes the importance of women and their role in the development of the country.
“As PAC we will support the 50:50 Campaign and what is needed is that you should give us more information on the same,” said Chingota.
Chingota said PAC will advocate in their prayer houses on the need to vote for women.
He said PAC will soon be meeting to strategise on the way forward.
Action Aid Malawi (AAM) executive director Grace Malera commended PAC for its interest to support the campaign.
Malera admitted that there are some issues which women themselves need to address before other people can come in.
“For example women have to stop the pull her down syndrome and start supporting each other,” said Malera.
Despite the campaign by on 50:50 Members of Parliament representation has not been impressive.
The 50-50 Campaign Management Agency comprises Centre for Civil Society Strengthening and AAM, who have come up with a variety of innovations to ensure more women win in the 2019 elections.
The campaign has since planned to create an incubator for women to express themselves as they aspire to enter political leadership as well as offering trainings for women aspirants on to enhance their profiles, communicate better and advocate for more spaces for women in decision making.
The 50-50 Campaign is due to be launched on April 6 2018 and has received a K1.1 billion financial support from the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

If you want girls and women to compete, then men should stop depending on women to cook, wash, clean and look after children. These things are the ones that put women and girls down. Zangaphee, haven’t you already seen that there a lot girls and women who are intelligent and hardworking than boys and men?
Men have failed Malawi and Africa. Let women lead our country. It’s great that the church is supporting women empowerment.
I don’t agree with this initiative. It’s biased and only want to impress donors. This is a deliberate act to frustrate men and boys we can’t have a 50-50 share just because we want to uplift somebody. Let them compete in a competitive environment and that share you are talking about is not reflective of ability but rather of share of women:men. Zangaphee you’re backward and a terrible misogynist. Women are unable to equally participate and benefit from socio-economic and political endeavours because of the dominance of men. Indeed, men use their advantage – cultural, social, economic and political to abuse girls and women. Times is up! Women must be reckoned as equal human beings. Men haven’t played fair that is why we need deliberate policies to ensure equal representation and participation of all people. Which female MP does not go to Parliament with corrupt motive(s) or discharge her duties with corrupt motive(s)???!!! They are just as corrupt as their male colleagues from their voting records otherwise we would not have had the myriads of avoidable scandals in Parliament!!!
