RVG unsuccessful Malawi Afcon campaign: Final dream shuttered with loss to Comoros

Malawi senior national team 2-019 African Cup of Nations finals qualifying dream was completely shuttered on Saturday after going down 2-1 to Comoros Island away in a Group B qualifying match played at the Stade de Moron.

Malawi coach RVG and his technical staff: End of the road

The Flames needed to win the game at all cost to keep their qualifying dream alive following Morocco’s 2-0 win over Cameroon on Friday.

Comoros took the lead inside the opening two minutes of the match.

They got a free kick on the edge of the box and Mohamad El Farado Ba with a brilliant shot beating Flames goalkeeper Charles Swini.

The home side was on top of its game with full support of the home crowd.

But Substitute Patrick Phiri who came in for Gastin Simkonda leveled the scores in the 65th minute before Comoros regained their lead two minutes later.

Following the result, Morocco are on top of Group B win 10 points from five games while Cameroon come second with eight points from the same number of games.

Comoros have moved to position three with five points.

Malawi’s last group match which will be a ceremonial match against Morocco will be played at Kamuzu Stadium in March next year.

U-23 win in Botswana

In Botswana, Malawi Under 23 national football team gave Malawians a relief and put smiles on faces of Malawians following a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Junior Zebras in a 2020 Under 23 Olympic Games qualifier played at Lobatse Sports Complex in Gaborone.

The junior Flames came from a goal down after the Zebras took the lead through Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

  1. RVG yours is a done deal of being sacked. I feel pity for you and how can a team concede a goal in 2mins? Welcome to the list of unemployment of coaches. The statistics are about to increase of jobless coaches. Flames are no longer a team and even the Queens Netball team are far much better. To prove my point, organize Flames and Queens play together, Flames will be beaten 42-0. Hail Queens

  2. Waste of tax payers money. Better stop participating in this competitions for years and use those money to pay fine, I think the fine will be less money compared to all the money lost in air travels, allowances plus cash getting too. Poor players and coaches including the FAM and reporters too for not telling the official the truth.

  3. Its unthinkable for the Technical team to keep faith in Chiukepo Msowoya who in my opinion is a spent force. He failed so miserably down in South . He failed to simulate in the developed word. Koma kudya msima pa mudzi ndi mbuzi inzake ija.
The whole technical team should resign honorably asatiyese ife.

  4. The problem with RVG is fielding of players, Why is he sticking to worn out players who are old past their useful life we have good players like MECIUM, GERALD PHIRI junior and many other super legue intelligent players. Why in a cruicial game like this use Gaston Simukonda, Chiukepo Msowoya. He need to make a program to asses rular talented players and bring into the National team new players

  5. This RVG guy doesn’t listen and I don’t know why he keeps faith in Chiukepo and Simukonda. There are better players like Matthews Sibale, Chawanangwa Kaonga, and Binwell Katinji who can do a good job upfront, but why keep using players that don’t deliver at national level? The players he is using especially upfront are a flop all the time and yet he still has faith in them, what kind of coach is he? He is a big disappointment.

  6. peter mponda, RVG please we dont want to see ur bad faces in this team, stay away from it.a pusi inu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  7. It is really embarrassing that Malawian football is at this level. So poor are we that we can not even beat the Comoros Island.
I think we need to go back to grassroots level and start developing malawi football from the bottom up. Start developing the youngster’s from.an early age with the right technical skill and understanding of the game of football. This will require investment in propery run football academies with qualified coaches and support staff.
Malawi must be one of the only African Nations without and established players even in the lower leagues of Europe. This is worrying and this needs to come to an add.
Perhaps we need Tabitha Chawinga and her sister Temi to be called to the mens squad to solve our goal scoring problems.

  8. Bad Flames.I think Flames need to go to the drawing board to check the problems with the team and try to find solutions. It is pity that Flames is failing even to beat these small teams.Malawi football is down please check with the Kinna and other players that are still alive that had success with the Malawi National team those days to help get solutions for the current team.Congratulations for the Junior Flames for the victory in Botswana. Please work and prepare extra hard for the return match so that you win again and proceed to the next round.

Also just to say good luck for the mambas as they face Chipolopolo this afternoon at Zimpeto Stadium in Maputo City.

  9. This was expected. No one is suprised. I have said before that this team is full of players who lack the skills, most of them are tired, the local league is useless, our local coaches do not have the skills to mould a player into a star. Forget about this team.

    1. It’s not a surprise indeed but what’s surprising is that it still hurts. Though the poor performance of the flames is very predictable, it still hurts to the core.

Do you know that the era of Nyamilandu has been of the worst results than any other past FAM executive team? Nyamilandu has had the longest yet the most pathetic era of them all. Their focus has been consolidating their staying power in positions. Their focus hasn’t been on what to do in order to improve football standards in Malawi, no! Their focus has always been what to do in order to still be in post. They have demonstrated zero strategy on how to progress the game, they have shown absolutely nothing substantive to indicate their willingness to make the flames a better team but I dare you to check how they have filled their own personal pockets with funds meant for the development of the game, check how many people they have bribed along the way to ensure they remain in the office. This administration has long past its ‘expirery date’, it’s ‘sell by date’ has long come and past. It’s high time we drain this FAM swamp. The sooner this administration vacates the office, the more chances our national team stands to move forward and demonstrate real progress.

In my opinion, here is what has to happen:

      1. Nyamilandu and his crunnes MUST pack their bags and vacate FAM offices and (we write their administration off our football records)

      2. Develop a structure that supports grassroot standard development.

      3. Bring back the mayor’s trophy in its shining armour

      4. Set a minimum qualifications and experience standard for super league coaches

      5. Instill a sense of discipline in our players that will make them feel very proud to wear the flames’ jeasy.

      6. Invest in a team in a way that encourages longer cohesion amongst the players

      7. Introduce at least 6 friendly games in a calendar year

Come to think of it, really we shouldn’t be crying foul due to resources and lack of sufficient funds, I mean look at the Queens, so very under funded, yet so very effective. They pinch above their weight. They have heart for what they do. They feel the responsibility of playing for the nation, they are so proud to be representing the national team. I kid you not, I have on several occasions watch the Queens play and man I tell you, just watching their commitment, watching their drive, watching their full out passion for the country at display, its very emotional and can bring about tears. BTW- we must make sure that Queens are well funded, they deserve it.

Our national football team is a disgrace. Flames? What flames? They should be called “ice”. They have no spark whatsoever. Hmm!
