Minister Vuwa batters ex-lover -paper

Sports, Youth Development and Welfare Minister, Symon Vuwa Kaunda is alleged to have severely beaten up his second wife, Rachael Nkavuli Kaunda, suspecting her of cheating on him with a clinician at Nkhota Kota District Hospital, The Weekend Times of Friday Reported.

The tabloid quotes a “source close to the young woman” as saying the minister beat her because he suspects she was going out with another man, an eye clinician at the hospital, John Chidzala.

Rachael is the minister’s second wife and they have a six-year old daughter together and they come from the same district, Nkhata Bay.

Vuwa: Cheated

According to the ‘scandal-sheet’, the incident happened in Nkhota Kota where Rachael worked for Malawi Savings Bank until November last year when she was suspended on work-related issues.

An eye witness is said to have told the newspaper that the minister locked up Rachael and her suspected boyfriend and beat the woman severely. The source said the minister was very angry and refused to calm down in the heat of things.

“It took the minister’s driver who called for help including the woman’s landlord to intervene. When the landlord arrived the door was still closed and the minister refused to open it.

“We could hear the woman crying inside. People had to force the door open and stop the beating the minister was administering on the woman,” the newspaper quotes the said source.

When the newspaper contacted the minister, he reportedly said the incident was being exaggerated by people he suspects would want to destroy him.

“That is a gross exaggeration of the incident. I have a child with a woman whom I had an affair before I became an Honourable Member of Parliament and appointed cabinet minister. These exaggerations are being propagated by people who want to destroy me,” Vuwa Kaunda is quoted to have said.

However, other parties involved in the matter refused to speak for fear of reprisals, saying they do not want to be victimized by the minister “since he has the power”.

When the newspaper interviewed Rachael about the incident, she is reported to have refused to comment and denied she was beaten.

However, her relative who spoke anonymously confirmed she was beaten up.

“When she arrived here her face was swollen and had been bleeding. The parents refused to take her in and demanded the minister should take her to hospital,” the relative said.

When the tabloid contacted the suspected boyfriend, he is also reported to have refused to comment referring the newspaper to Rachael.

“I cannot comment because I am not the one who was beaten. And I don’t want to say anything because this is a sensitive issue and it involves a very senior officer in the government and you know how things are these days. I can be victimized for commenting on this, please leave me alone. If you want, talk to Rachael herself, not me,” he is quoted to have told the newspaper, before cutting the line.

The  landlord Tifa Ngoma refused to comment.
