Itaye fires Liza Msusa: Reinstates Lipenga, Chitsonga at Macra
Beleaguered Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) Director General Godfrey Itaye has fired Director of Postal Services Liza Msusa and reinstated two more directors he fired last week.
Nyasa Times reported that Itaye last week fired Msusa, Director of Broadcasting Fegus Lipenga and Director of Finance Ben Chitsonga claiming their contracts had expired.
But in a twist of events, Itaye has reinstated Lipenga and Chitsonga this week leaving out Msusa.
“Its true Liza Msusa has been fired. We all know the reason why she has been sacked is because her husband, Khwesi, is a close friend of the Vice President and UTM presidential candidate Dr Saulos Chilima. She has not been fired because of her performance at work, she was a star performer, ” said Nyasa Times impeccable source at Macra.
“When the three directors were forced to undergo interviews we all knew the target was Liza Msusa not the other two and most people here are not surprised,” added the source.
She also said the board of directors has no power as they all succumb to Itaye.
“There is no board of directors here. Itaye runs the show without bothering about the board. If he feels like taking an issue to the board, then he just does that because he is bored and would like to so something to cheer his spirits up.”
“But in reality we dont have a board worth its name. They are all ‘madeya eni eni’. The board just exist in name because if there was one, all this nonsense would not be happening,” said the source.
Itaye has been presing over reign of corruption at Macra and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) opened investigations into two multi-million kwacha contracts the regulator is alleged to have dubiously awarded in 2017.
The contracts in question include a K19 million supply contract Macra reportedly awarded to a business firm owned by a relation to an executive manager and another relating to printing of calendars worth K135 million.
If Liza Msusa’s husband is close to Saulosi Chilima, then she deserves to be kicked out. These are the people who disseminate crucial information to Saulosi that he unashamedly publicises during his rallies!

Now clever contractors take the contract as automatic and this becomes negotiable. The language used in the contracts is always vague and employees take advantage of such vagueness to advance their arguments to demand renewal. Some of us have been working on several contractual roles, but we have never raised issues when such contracts expired because the offer letters clearly indicate that the renewal of the contract is subject to successful completion. This condition remains in force and how do employers justify that? They evaluate to determine whether you have met the condition they provided in their offer letter has been met or not and they show you the results so that if you objects to the results, you appeal against the evaluators before you are told your services are no longer required. If this doesn’t happen with Malawi Government then the system is bad.

As I wrote earlier on, Director General has no power to fire anyone from the position of Deputy Director to Director, all rest in the power of the Board of directors, the fact that they went for interviews means their contracts expired and they are supposed to go through normal process where they have to compete with others , this is a fair game for every JIM and Jack ,The second thing Itaye comes from lower shire and Nsanje to be specific .

This is a miscalculated mistake that may lead to his downfall very soon. Itaye is a snake in the grass and I would like to disagree with those that have in past said he is a DDP boy. DPP may have made a wrong assumption that he is a DPP boy because he comes from Chiradzulu, but the truth is that not all the people from the district support the party. If Itaye was a true DPP lover, this is the time he would have played his cards right in order for his party to get more votes. What he has done is suicidal and he will have no symphathy from any should he one day be on the side of spectators.
Who fires when it comes to such big positions?
